    A good choice in Kotohira

Kotohira is a tiny town and the main attraction is Kompira-san. It was typhoon season when we were there and pouring with rain, but well worth the climb up more than 1000 steps to the temple. This hotel is very close to the station and to the temple. Try to get a non-smoking room if you can. Also even if you are a couple, my recommendation is to try to get twin bedded rooms rather than a double bed. Rooms in Japanese hotels are tiny, as are the beds, and twin bedded rooms are generally a bit larger. This hotel's twin-bedded rooms were a fair size. The western breakfast was a nice surprise for the teenage kids- displayed beautifully on trays and with individual egg cookers. Nearby Udon restaurants were ok. In the evening we ate at a Sushi place recommended by the hotel. It was terrible food.

    It does the trick

Riverside hotel offers what you'd expect from a business hotel. Standard, but clean rooms in a anonymous atmosphere. Nothing new or bad there. However the staff speaks very little English making communication difficult and the bathrooms are very small. Next to that we had a small 'incident' in which the cleaning staff left our door open all day.

    Spotlessly clean, fantastic service

I stay here almost every year when I go to see the annual Konpira Kabuki performance. I just want to review insure readers that the service and cleanliness is up to par. The hotel is located right near the center fo town, but is still across the litel river so is quiet enough. The rooms are decent-sized and have amenities like shampoo and soap, refrigerator, TV, hot water pot (with tea bags), etc. The food is very good and they often serve local seasonal specialties. On the first floor, there are seperate mens & women's hotspring baths that are immaculate and great for a good soak as early as 6:00am or till 9:00pm. There is soap, shampoo and conditioner in the bathing area, and shelves for garments. There is a washing machine in the room shoudl you feel like doing laundry. Don't forget to try the "sanuki udon" noodles when in Kotohira, also the local sake at the Kinryo sake brewery nearby, and get a cone of soy sauce flavored soft ice cream after lunch. Incidentally, it is a 30~40-minute hike to the top of Mt Konpira, which is said to have 785 steps to the "Okuno-in" shrine at the top. It commands spectacular views of the area, well worth the walk to the top!

    Tired rooms

A bland modern mid-price hotel in a convenient and calm location in the centre of town. The rooms are functional with western beds and ensuite bathrooms, but the decor is tired and the amenities are dated. There is a small but smart communal hot bath facility. Breakfast is Japanese, with coffee available. Free wifi. An adequate place to stay for one night, but it would be a lot better if they modernised the bedrooms.

The oldest Kabuki Theatre and a shrine dedicated to seafaring

The 'Riverside' is a modern hotel located by the river and not far from the train station. Its rooms are large in comparison to other Japanese hotels. They serve a nice Chinese breakfast. All important sites to visit are within walking distance.
