    Value for money!

This hotel is located just across the Kumamoto Castle (which is now under major maintenance due to damage sustained in the earthquake previously), so unfortunately I wasn't able to enjoy the view of the castle from the hotel. However, I was upgraded to a twin room (from a single room), so for the price I paid it was truly value for money. Needless to say, it is also a very short walk to the castle (for visiting what's remaining opened to travelers). Room is large and cosy for my two-night stay. Point to note, only a couple of buses can reach the entrance of the hotel and service is not frequent. I am fine with walking (just a short 10-minute walk for myself from the nearest tram station), however if you are traveling with children or elderly or bulky luggage that might be your concern.

    A lovely hotel

Great location overlooking the castle (the castle is unfortunately under renovation at the moment due to earthquake damage but is clearly impressive), and about a 10 minute walk to the start of the main shopping area. Very efficient and friendly service throughout the hotel. We tried the coffee shop and chinese restaurant and both were very good and you get a discount as a hotel guest. The room was large, well equipped and very comfortable and had a view to the castle. The room rate was very reasonable for this standard of hotel.

Very Good on location, room quality, service and value for money

Stayed here for two nights in what is described as a Japanese-Western Room. We had a double room on level 5 looking towards the castle. The room was a very good size, one of the two largest we had during this period of travel in Japan. It comprised the sleeping area of the room with two large single beds side by side (as is frequently Japanese custom). The beds are standard height beds (ie not mattresses on the floor) and were very comfortable. There is an eating area with tatami matting. This has a low table with four seats all down at floor level. There is an entrance way to the room with a toilet to one side. On the other side is the bathroom split into small two rooms, one with a wash basin and the other the shower and bath. This is a typical Japanese wet-room arrangement whereby you shower standing on the bathroom floor (ie the whole room is the shower room). The room had a lovely, expansive view towards the town and directly across to the castle. (Be aware that the castle is cloaked in scaffolding and cranes as they work to restore the castle following the major earthquake in 2016. This work will be ongoing for a few years. See photo of the view attached.) Three minor issues to be aware of with the room: there was no room safe; WiFi whilst free was slow and kept dropping out; and only green tea bags are provided (if you want coffee you need to bring your own supply or buy a coffee at the small coffee shop in the hotel lobby). KKR Hotel is not in the city centre like most other hotels. We found this an advantage because we had that view and there were trees and a garden to look out over. It was very pleasant. The hotel is a 10 to 12 minute easy walk on a gentle slope down into the town centre. It was about 1,700 Yen by taxi from the railway station (this would probably cost a little more for the hotels in the centre). We had our breakfasts in the hotel and I thought they were excellent. Kumamoto is less visited by westerners than other big cities. This seemed to be true of the hotel too. In keeping with this the breakfast buffet catered mainly with Japanese options although there were small quantities of bacon, sausage and eggs. A picture of a breakfast plate with a selection of items I chose is attached to give an idea. The breakfast room is very pleasant with a view to the castle. Coffee is available at breakfast. Staff were charming and helpful throughout. The staff at reception all had a basic command of English which was helpful and appreciated. We paid 25,000 Yen per night for our room and 2,400 Yen per night for breakfast for two. I thought this represented very good value for money. Highly recommended. I would choose to stay here again.

    Large room in Kumamoto

The circular tourist bus stops right outside this hotel so it's easy to reach from the station. Once inside, there is a spacious lobby and generously sized bedrooms. We were lucky to have a room looking over the castle but unfortunately it is currently covered with scaffolding following the 2016 earthquake. To get around town you could use the tourist bus but it's fairly infrequent so it's best to walk about 5 minutes down the hill to reach the bus and tram stops.

If only the castle is opened, if only the castle is not under renovation, if only...... The hotel has an excellent view of the castle as it is just located opposite of the castle. It is just unfortunate that the castle is closed, otherwise the staff is very pleasant and attentive.
