Remarkable ServiceWe ended up staying at Hanajukai pretty much by accident, as the heavy rainfall of July 2018 made it impossible to reach our hotel in the Iya valley. Our decision to spend the night here turned out to be one of the best of our stay in Japan, however. The hotel itself is beautiful, with a stunning location up a steep hillside overlooking Takamatsu city, and remarkable attention to detail within. If you keep your eyes open, you will find yourself endlessly running into little decorative pieces, terrariums and all sorts of fascinating things. The rooms are wonderful, with a perfect combination of Japanese tradition and modern convenience (and, again, the stunning panoramic views of the city). The kaiseki dinner in the restaurant was also delicious (not to the extent that I would recommend anyone come here for the food alone, however). As indicated by the title of my review, the staff were the highlight of our stay, though. Incredible attention to detail (even by Japanese standards), combined with genuine warmth and a more personal touch than in most Japanese hotels. I cannot recommend this hotel enough, and will definitely stay here again if I ever have the pleasure of returning to Takamatsu.

Good service, nice hotelWith a nice view of the harbour. Good meals and the staff are warm and eager to help. Only disadvantage is too far away from the town. However, they provide free shuttle service to and from the harbour.

OverpricedWe stayed here for one night as part of a trip to Naoshima. The hotel is set back from the main part of the city, up a hill. The grounds are beautiful, and the view is good. The staff were all lovely and very helpful. Breakfast was mostly Japanese style, and good. However, our room was dated, hot, smelled of smoke, and had poor amenities. We were charged more than originally quoted when we booked, by about 150%. This hotel was expensive, and the pictures on the website did not match the reality of the room. We were disappointed, and felt cheated. Would not return, cannot recommend.

Wonderful stay and love the in-room onsenThe hotel is located on a hill and oversees the Takamatsu, It's like 10-15 mins ride from the city centre. Staff are very helpful and speak okay English. We stayed here for two nights. Our room is a special Japanese style room with a private outdoor onsen. The room is quite spacious and clean. We enjoy the private onsen a lot although it was quite windy. Luckily they have two shower facilities one located inside the room so we can do not need to shower in the outdoor on the cold windy day. We also tried the public onsen and enjoyed the night view of Takamatsu. Set kaiseiki style dinner was served in a private in the restaurant while breakfast is buffet style at the lobby floor restaurant with a good range of food.
