Authentic Kyoto ryokan experienceOur family of 4 (2 teenage boys) stayed 2 nights at the Kinse Inn in Kyoto (March 2014). If you're looking to experience authentic "back street" Kyoto / Japan, this is the place for you to stay. The Inn felt like stepping back in time (but there is WiFi :) with the tatami mats, the slippers and the futons to sleep on (not sure if that's the accurate word for them?). We enjoyed some quiet family time playing cards in the sitting room - we had the whole upstairs to ourselves, so it was private. The neighborhood was also charming and the restaurants recommended by Kojiro and Seanacey were all wonderful and inexpensive. Have your Google translator app (or something similar) handy because the local restaurant personnel do not speak English. For us, this added to the adventure and we never went hungry. Kinse Inn is withing easy walking distance of a train station that is 1 stop away from Kyoto station, but Kojiro and Seanacey will also call you a taxi if needed. Definitely recommended!

Beautiful Traditional Ryokan/Vacation RentalBeautifully preserved 100 year old ryokan building with a modern bath decorated wonderfully atmospherically. The bedroom and living room are completely traditional while the downstairs bar and private upstairs lounge have a fabulous sixties sort of vibe. The location has great bus access all over the city--which is probably the easiest way to see all of the sites--and it is wonderfully quite at night. There is a great onsen (hot springs) style public bath next door which is open quite late, and a few sites and good restaurants within walking distance. While it is not currently run like a ryokan or hotel but more of a vacation rental, the owners are very friendly and understanding, and the air conditioning and wi-fi worked perfectly. We were very sad to leave it and would recommend the place to anyone who likes Japanese design and want a unique experience in Kyoto.

lovely well kept ryokan in a quiet streetLovely well kept ryokan in a quiet neighbourhood, close to a trainstation (1 station away from Kyoto central). We had the entire upper floor to ourselves and really enjoyed the authentic elements of the ryokan. Great dinertips from the owners and a nice bar downstairs. Wifi worked very well.

Unfortunately No.Stayed there fore 4 nights and was really looking forward to it- it looks superb- however in reality It's old, its very tired, it not well maintained, everything creaks and groans- the beds are horribly uncomfortable- really really uncomfortable. There are no creature comforts and it's out of town- oh and they roast coffee every morning- but you cannot get a coffee until late afternoon, you just just get the noise of the roasting coffee machine for a few hours every morning.

Fantastic stay, spacious and charming houseWe had a lovely stay in this unique place: a trip in the past in this amazing 200 years old house. Great spacious and bright living-room, three nice and comfortable bedrooms with cosy futon bed, very convenient bathroom. Wonderful feeling of total immersion in the Japanese history. On top of that, lovely to meet Kejiro and Seanacey... and always cool to come downstairs for a beer or a taste of Japanese whisky in the charming bar, a trip in itself. Definitely highly recommended, totally in line with pictures and description provided
