Great Onsen, Great Food, Great Service! They have large rooms that have American Style beds if that's what you're looking for. The rooms we stayed in were very roomy, had two full sized beds along with a tatami room where you can pull out futons to sleep on. Much roomier than the hotels we were staying at during the trip. The food was hands down the best food we had during our trip in Japan. What Kumamoto is known for is their Basashi (raw horsemeat). But at Kikuchi Kanko Hotel, they make it a Uma Tataki ("Seared Horse" kind of like seared ahi) where the outside is seared. This was hands down the best thing you'll ever eat. The dinner was very traditional, so hopefully you're open minded when it comes to their traditional dinner they offer. The ryokan (hotel) provided us with our own "chaperone" who walked us to our room, taught us how to put on our Yukata, and was our private server who told us what each item on the plate was and how to eat it for the first night. The ryokan also offers a buffet style breakfast with a great selection. It's not the typical American breakfast, so don't expect Waffles and Pankcakes. The furo (bath) is great as well. Very clean and on the men's side, they offer an incredible outside furo with tunnels, waterfall, etc. It's too bad the women don't get to use this because this is the only hotel in Kikuchi that has this. Why can't women use it? Because the outside furo is visible from some of the rooms. But the women's side has an outside furo as well, just not as grand as the men's oustide furo. Overall, this was the most relaxing part of the trip after an exhausting trip (but beautiful) trip in Kyoto. As mentioned before, the food was the best. If you want drunken karaoke, you can do that too! It might be on the pricey side, but WELL worth it.

terrible ryokan, in terrible locationthis is just an awful ryokan, dirty, threadbare carpets, old furniture stacked in corridors, cracks on the walls... seems like the owners gave up on the place about 30years ago. the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded only by cheap nasty red light district and dumpy houses... usually no matter how bad the ryokan is, the onsen might make up for any shortcomings... the outdoor onsen looked quite nice, unfortunately because 'kikuchi is famous for scorching water' the water was so hot i couldn't even use the onsen... this was the first time ever i haven't been able to walk in onsen water for fear of getting burnt... and it wasn't just me thinking this, i talked to two other japanese men who said the same... in summary, terrible place , avoid kikuchi and this ryokan hotel. better going to yufuin,
