Tiny Japanese style roomArrival was impressive! They had staff on the road, on the driveway and at the entrance giving you a grand, warm welcome. The staff are all extremely well trained and exudes genuine hospitality. Any staff you come across will greet you with a smile and a bow. Special mention must be made for the girl who comes (every half hour it seems) to clear the ashtray in the smoking room. The dining room staff are equally impressive especially during rush hour breakfast. Should have booked a better room than the standard Japanese style. I was a bit disappointed with the room which was small and cramped with basic, dated furnishing. It is a stark contrast to the vibrant, plush, expansive feel of the common areas. The staff who comes and set up the futons in the evenings are great but there is a lot of maneuvering of table, chairs and our luggage to make space. Bedding is exceptionally soft and comfy. The garbage bin is tiny so we left our take-away containers on the table thinking housekeeping would clear it away but it was still on the table when we got back in the evening! The indoor onsen is large, clean and well equipped however the outdoor one is tiny and inadequate. Breakfast was superb with a large, generous spread of quality offerings. The common areas are Instagrammable and very inviting. Guests are encouraged to walk around in their yukatas and chill in the many lounges around the lobby.

Lovely resort and onsenThe lobby is expansive and in the evenings the locals were relaxing in their kimonos and watching ruby. Many also visited the buffet in their robes. The buffet is vast with deer curry and burgers, grilled snail, a Vietnamese section, and lots of seafood. And the local blue beer.

Not enough heatingWe were greeted warmly upon arrival. The reception was fast and professional. We had booked the tatami rooms . If you dislike getting up and down , it is advisable to book the room with western beds . The room was very cold . We were so tired after a day of touring , we took a nap sleeping on the floor without the made up mattress covered with our coats and woke up shivering . No matter how we pressed the Controllers , the room just did not heat up . Finally we decided to call the reception and they replied that they will switch on the heater . The air con miraculously turned on with hot air blowing out by itself ! The heating was automatically turned off again at 7 am and the room started turning cold again . With the price paid , I would expect adequate heating . Hence though I would rate this hotel as a 4.5, the heating problem is a big issue for me. Dinner was a good spread with good ambience but only crab soup. No crabs . Breakfast was ok. Onsens were good with a small outdoor onsen. Love the big screen showing the wildlife in Shiretoko in the lobby. Wifi was adequate . Overall a good stay if not for the heating problem . Management should look into this . I will not return because of this issue.

Shiretoko Road TripThis was a great experience on our Shiretoko road trip. We were looking for a place to stay when the campsite we planned to stay at was closed early. The western room was really nice and the onsen was amazing in the evening. The breakfast and dinner buffets are huge and make life very easy when you're looking for a little comfort and relaxation on your trip.
