Comfortable stayMy husband and I stayed for one night to attend a private party held at the hotel. Since there were no lifts we asked for a ground floor room since my husband cannot manage stairs so we were allocated a room in the Coach house. It was so comfortable, clean with a beautiful wet room and large fluffy towels. I would suggest that a towel rail is added as there was nowhere to hang the towels once used and as is common with other hotels, the toilet roll dispenser was in a peculiar position relative to the actual loo. A big bonus was that in a double room, there were 2 armchairs Not always The case in many hotels. The food and service at both the party and breakfast were high quality as was the service with helpful and efficient staff. There was a loose panel in the entrance door to the Coach house which we reported and I would also suggest better lighting in the courtyard but these are relatively minor niggles which I'm sure the owner can sort out. We had had to book really early which we were allowed to do before the rooms were officially released because we needed the accommodation in order to attend the party. The price was much higher than that advertised on this website and although we are happy with the room, service, food etc and had a really good time ( with thanks to the staff) the price was a bit steep. Normally, when we have stayed at a hotel to attend a function in it, the rooms have had a discount. Something for the owner to consider. If we need to stay there again instead of with family locally, we would not hesitate to do so but would hope for a favourable price.

Poorly managedLeft a list of defects with the hotel when we left on 31/1 and haven't received any feedback from them so now we leave our own feedback here. Paid £150 per night instead of the £98 on hotels.com when we left. Nice old building with some charactar left. Friendly staff. But: Bedroom: Very creaky bed No heating on first day, only 16 degrees. Told staff we were going to local pub to get warm but when we got back they had only 'purged the boiler' and the heating still wasn't working. A portable fan was acquired while they waited for the plumber at 8pm. Cracked paint and black mouldy frames around glass on all windows. Single glass so 3 heaters on full to combat cold which then causes draughts. Curtains filled with dust. Top of clothes cupboard dusty (only about a weeks worth so it has been cleaned sometimes) Bathroom: Spotlight in ceiling not working. Toilet seat chipped with missing paint/coating so you can't see if it's clean or not. Missing sealant between bath & tiles. Bath drain blocked and letting out about half of what the shower head gives. 'Sliding' glass wall to prevent shower water leaking over the bath sides hasn't been cleaned or greased in years. It takes two hands to entice it out in small increments And more to close again. I'm surprised it hasn't shattered already. Ceiling fan doesn't work. Corridor outside room: Paint peeling from obvious roof leak - no sing of any remedial work being carried out. Bar: Nice residents bar but why not start a fire in the fireplace when it's only 5 degrees outside? Breakfast room. Small tables & carpet but ok Food: Pretentious. Same menu both days with choice of chicken, vegetarian or salmon. I wouldn't order the chicken again as it came on a bed of runny lettuce. No potatoes or veggies. We both ate at the local pub the second night and it was cheaper, had a burning fire, and the food was excellent. An English breakfast is a simple thing why complicate it with spiced sausages? Why only black pudding and not white pudding? And why, after ordering a very specific 'rock hard steaked egg - when you think it's done you're only getting started' did I have to move the runny mess to another plate and change my knife & fork?. So, loads of room for improvement folks, and until they do I wouldn't stay with them.

December weddingWe had our wedding reception here in December2019. We had the most amazing day and the staff couldn't have done more for us. The lead up to the wedding was easy, with Samantha helping us along the way and making us feel at ease with everything. Our guests couldn't have complimented the food more, it was exquisite. All our overnight guests also enjoyed their stay and the breakfast the following morning. Overall we couldn't have asked for our day to go any better, and that was mainly due to the amazing staff and all the hard work they put in. I would highly recommend for people to book their weddings at Kelham house. We look forward to returning for a stay here. Natasha Bonser

Nice staySpacious bright rooms, exceptionally cleaned and smelt nice, bed was comfy. Would only recommend brighter light in the hallway as it is quite dull, needed maintenance here and there. Overall it was a pleasant stay.
