  External impressions can be misleading

  I stayed here just for one night and I arrived at the start of snowfall. I mention this because the approach road and the road to the hotel's car park was difficult to navigate. I was assured by the hotel staff that the situation would be dealt with but it wasn't, as I found out on the morning of my departure. No snow had been removed and the roads were icy. When staying at a hotel such as this, it all looks very nice from the outside but it's when you are staying there that you realise there are pitfalls, some of which I found out. The floors were creaking, the walls were thin, the electrical situation and the associated items in the room left a lot to be desired and most annoyingly, the plumbing pipes weren't well insulated. This meant that you were disturbed by the noise of the effluent surging through the pipes from the upstairs room. This was quite disconcerting when you were about to go to sleep and then be awakened by 'Niagara Falls' next to you. Because of the inclement weather, there was no opportunity to find a local restaurant for dinner so I was a member of the captive audience for the night. While the food was good, I found the price tag to be expensive for what I had.

  Great castle, great village

  Hotel Kasteel Doenrade is actually in our home village, were practically neighbors and regulars, so may not be totally objective here. As we are locals, weve never slept here, it we did get married here. The location itself is nothing but spectacular. New ownership since has definitely put the restaurant back on the map and the food is excellent. When I last visited -with a business relation- the service was super friendly but took very long. Some mistakes were made and we waited very long to be served, it our waitress confessed she was new and trying to get the hang of things. Fair enough. We stayed for drinks and din er and everything was to a very high standard and good value for money. If youre in town, definitely worth a visit.

  Warning

  I stayed here for 4 nights. While the hotel is ok I am disappointed to report that someone accessed my room when I was out and in all 99% probability it was one of the staff and stole my 2 passports. This hotel is well out of the way so couldnt have been a passing wanderer. So be warned, leave nothing of value in your room. No safe was provided. This incident caused me a lot of distress and spoilt the whole experience. The 2 passports were immediately cancelled. I am very sorry I ever heard of this place.

  A sunday stay

  We stayed for one night in this hotel. Room 11 was good, badroom was clean and comfortable. This night only two rooms where occupied, so it was very quiet. We had dinner which was very good. The dining was fully booked, mostly locals who had dinner with family and friends. We had a good breakfast. Sevice was good. Sauna was ok, but the ceiling in the room outside the cabin is desperately in need for some little repairs. We would like to return next spring.

  Wedding anniversary

  We spent a night at Kasteel Doenrade for our 5 year wedding anniversary. We booked the wedding suit. The room itself was great, big living room, big bathroom with a jacuzzi and the bed was also good. We have nothing to complain over when it comes for the accommodations. It also looks like it could be used for big festivitys as well. However, we ordered alcohol free cava to our room, which was confirmed in forehand. But we received cava with alcohol, and when we went to get this sorted out they didnt have the alcohol free Cava, but we ended up with sparkling drinks for kids. A totally bummer. We also ended up with paying double tax since the receptionist at check-in didnt record any receipt to our papers and we didnt get any receipt either, so when we checked out we ended up with paying double tax with a total of 17,8. For the Hotel: Please get this sorted out, since we didnt get any receipt for this at check-in we couldnt argue with it. Conclusion is, great accommodations, but we ended up with paying double tax and didnt get what we ordered. We are switching between two or three stars on our evaluation of Kasteel Doenrade.
