Wonderful traditional ryokan at Bessho Onsen

Beautiful ryokan at Bessho Onsen. Bessho's hot spring water is said to be good for your skin and is called Bijin no Yu (beautiful lady's onsen ). Our room had an open-air hot spring bath attached to it. It was fabulous! We had a wonderful kaiseki dinner and another fantastic meal for breakfast the next morning. We ate in our own private dining room and the staff was very attentive and accommodating. They even have English speaking staff that makes everything easier. I was very impressed that they were waiting and knew our name when we arrived by taxi, which was only a 30 minute ride from the train station. Truly a wonderful stay.

Traditional ryokan with open air bath

The ryokan was a bit hard for us to find but we asked one of the locals who were happy to point it out. The staff saw our arrival from the entrance and rushed out to help with our luggage. It was a very effusive greeting full of warmth and friendliness. We stayed 2 nights in a Japanese style room with private open air hot spring bath including breakfast and kaiseki dinners. The room was amazing clean, comfortable and luxurious. We had a massage chair in the room which massaged all the bones out of me. The breakfasts and kaiseki dinners were so delicious. On our second night, mid-way through our dinner the staff actually forgot about us! We were about 3 courses into our dinner and then no one came for a very long time. After half an hour we went out of our private dining room to investigate and could not find anyone. I wanted to leave but my dinner companions were not willing to leave half an expensive dinner behind. Finally we flagged down a staff after an hour of waiting. She expressed mild surprise, muttered something about having forgotten us, gave us a half-hearted apology and went to get a staff to serve us the rest of our dinner. Given the length of time we waited, I found it very disconcerting that a proper apology or an explanation was not given. Aside from this bizarre event, the staff were very attentive in all other matters. I travelled with my two sisters and we are quite laid back people so we were a bit bemused with the deference shown to us. After checking out we were asked if we were taking the train. We said yes and the staff gave us coupons for the train. It turns out they were tickets for a free ride back to Ueda. It felt like a Studio Ghibli experience at an amazing ryokan.

    Great onsen town and ryokan

If you like onsen and a little luxury, this is the place for you. It has a little onsen bath in the Japanese style room (which itself is fantastic), a private outdoor plus indoor onsen you can reserve, standard ryokan onsen and public onsen right outside. The food is outstanding and the service of this 100+ year old establishment is exceptional. It wasn't cheap but it sure was worth every cent. I would send pictures but it's way too difficult on TripAdvisor to do so.

    This place is WOW.

From the welcome to the send off this place has been a pleasure. They really do know good service. The place looks beautiful and you are spoiled for choice of Onsens. They have 3 different onsen to choose from just inside the hotel, and several public onsen around Bessho if you even have time for that. We only stayed 1 night and only had time to try 2 of the 3 onsen. Each had an indoor tub and an outdoor tub. Really recommend the outdoor ones. Food was great, beds were great, rooms were great. Cannot recommend this place enough.

    Perfect stay

The whole stay was absolutely perfect. The food was exquisite and surprising, and is such a good memory. The room was confortable and spacious, and we really enjoyed the onsen. The biggest compliment is for the staff: efficient, discreet and thoughtful. I have been in more "luxurious" hotels, but I have never experienced such a quality in the service. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our stay, and we would like to thank the man at the reception who was so considerate and offered us a small change-purse as we were having troubles with all of our coins... so helpful throughout our Japan trip! This hotel was THE expense of our trip, but we are so happy we stayed in this wonderful place.
