Fantastico

Can't Wait to Go Again! Fabulous HotelMy husband and I stayed here for a holiday weekend and we both loved it. It is perfectly located in the town because it's inside the old City wall but it's just down the road from the main square that is full of people and restaurants, so it is much quieter than being right in the square. We had considered the Clarion as our other option, but when we saw how busy it was, we were glad we chose Kalk. There is an adorable coffee shop right around the corner and it's very close to walk to the beach for a fabulous sunset. The bikes we rented from Kalk really made the trip fabulous. They have baskets so you can take all your beach stuff and ride to the beach for a swim. Joseph at the front desk was amazingly helpful with advice and recommendations. We just did everything he told us to and had a great time! The rooms are small but very charming and modern and have everything you need. They have AC in the rooms which was a rare find and very helpful during the heat waves that seem to come more and more often. When we go back, we will pay the extra for a top floor room as a couple of the rooms had really cute little balconies that over look the sea. The breakfast was good and healthy. The whole place is clean and sophisticated and was a highlight of our trip!

Charm in the Old CitySteps from Stora Torget and the Botanical Gardens, the Kalk is in the perfect location to explore Visby. Note you cannot park at the hotel, however it is a very short walk along the path from the Kruttornets Parking lot. Be sure to try Värdshuset Lindgården restaurant (1 block away). Rooms are comfortable and well appointed with windows that open to allow in the sea breeze. Breakfast is a real treat! The individual cups of yogurt with fruits are delightful. Try the guest's favorite! Staff are knowledgable about the area and most helpful with recommendations and directions. We would definitely stay here again.

DisappointedChoosing the right accommodation for a trip is always a tricky business. As it turned out, Kalk and me were a terrible match. But there are good things as well as bad ones, and no establishment will ever be able to satisfy every customer. But this is my input; Location is great, a leisurely walk from the ferry terminal and easy to find. Very close to the sea and to the town centre with all its shops and restaurants. I booked a standard single room, after having read in the hotel description that it would have a 140 cm bed. And the room was beautiful. Large, comfortable bed, lots of space, fantastic bathroom with rain shower. Safe, iron, ironing board, flat screen tv. There is a minibar, but the selection is very small and all non alcoholic. The fridge comes in very handy for your own stuff though. Make sure you bring a shower cap unless you want to wash your hair every day. Rain showers are lovely, but very difficult to keep your head dry What I didnt like was that room number 17 is exactly above the bar/restaurant Brödernas krog, and that there is no sound proofing what so ever. I could hear every word they said in the bar below my floor, not to mention the music, Now, note that I stayed here on weekdays only and in October, which is not high season. I cant imagine what it must be like during the summer holidays or even on the weekends. I did raise this with the young man in reception, who kindly gave me ear plugs. A whole bag of them ... There are also no blackout curtains, but just white cotton curtains with a black pattern and some kind of see through lining. With one window facing the bar entrance, and the other facing the street, it was not possible to get the room dark. If you like that or not, I suppose depends on what kind of sleeper you are. Coffee and tea making facilities are at the top of my list when I chose a hotel, and so I wrote to Kalk beforehand and asked. I received a very kind a polite answer from someone named Josef, that yes, indeed there was coffee and tea making facilities in the room. And yes, there was a kettle and two cups. One bag of cherry tea and one of green tea. No plain black tea, no sugar, no milk, no spoons and no COFFEE! I was disappointed, but as reception is not open after 6pm, I had to wait until the day after to ask for supplies. And so I did, and received a spoon and two sticks of instant coffee. The next day it was all gone again. Then I went to ICA and bought myself coffee, milk and a spoon, and wrote a note to the cleaner to please not remove it as I had bought it myself. Seems like a lot of complaining here, but it would be better to be honest and write on the website for example that a kettle is supplied, and whatever else you need you bring yourself. Then you know, and will not be disappointed. Finally the breakfast. I love hotel breakfasts, and I think many others do too. The breakfast at Kalk is very different, and that is okay as long as it is clearly communicated. Be sure to note that there are few of the regular breakfast items present. I.e. no corn flakes, no plain tea, only filter coffee from a thermos flask,no corn flakes, almost nothing warm. If you like tiny glasses with sweet chia puddings and green tea though, this is the place for you On a more serious note, Im not sure I find it completely Corona safe to let all guest touch and carve their bread from the same loaf. Being able to book a room without breakfast would be a good idea, that way you can try in the first day and then if you dont like it you dont have to pay for double breakfasts. Personally Im not in the position that I can, but decided to splash out once and have breakfast at Clarion on one of the mornings. Its such a shame. Kalk could be exactly the 4 star hotel (and more) that they want to be. All it takes is a little more attention to detail and more of a please the customer attitude, even if it means having to serve and do things you dont necessarily like yourself.
