Truly a temple of Tamil traditions

When it comes to vacations, resorts are probably the first option that the tourists look at to unwind and have a relaxing time in the lap of luxury. Standing far in the outskirts of towns and cities, although these properties do offer a sense of serenity in the wake of the verdure they are surrounded by, most of the places fail to capture the essence of the cities' tourist attractions. Even cities with rich cultural heritage like Madurai suffer from the same fate, having beautiful resorts built along the sidelines but none actually potraying the celebrated history that the temple city unfolds. Kadambavanam however, is a one-of-a-kind place which is trying to break the wheel, showcasing the vibrant culture and traditions of the Tamil region. Being relatively insulated from the external influences and invasions, the region in itself evolved both in terms of technology and culture - something that Kadambavanam has made their sole aim to preserve and perpetuate to the travelling patrons through a comprehensive set of activities. Located in the sea of natural serenity, the resort is enveloped in surrounding mountain ranges, embellished with an alluring array of mango and coconut groves all across. The place holds dainty village style cottages for accomodation, each of which is themed after a tamil great. My personal stay here was quite a comfortable one - thanks to the cozy beds and linen with all amenities provided, along with an open air shower which was totally a cherry on top. Their in-house restaurant too is something to look forward to, having chefs perfectly adept of recreating those local Tamil delicacies from the seasonal produce available. Dining in for a quick lunch, I got to experience a traditional Tamil feast served on a banana leaf and having my own hands as my spoons and forks. On the menu were multiple local delights including the hot regional favourites, Mutton Chukka - dry preparation of goat chunks loaded with pepper and chili and Natu Kodi Varuval - subtle yet meaty country chicken curry preparation along with some dishes which even I heard for the first time. My personal favourites included the Muttai Paniyaram which was an egg dish created in a specialized traditional vessel, Uppu Kari Soru which had a decent mutton gravy mixed in with rice and lastly the Eral Varual having juicy, plump prawns in a spicy sauce. Finishing the meal were the seasonal summer fruits from the city, which included Mango and Jackfruit along with Bananas which were made into a delectable chutney, perfect to cool things down in this hot weather. Apart from the conventional workshops and lectures about the philosophy and civilization, Kadambavanam whets the appetite of the tourist thorough various other activities including walks to the nearby villages, cultural programmes as well as Yoga session. They are planning to soon finish constructing their health center which shall be the home of the usual resort frills of sauna, massage and jacuzi along with the additional naturopathy treatments of mud therapy, helio therapy, etc, all decored in the same rustic style as the rest of the resort. All in all, Kadambavanam truly does justice to its name of "Temple of Tradition" and is a worthwhile spot for all the globetrotters who would want to dive deep in the heritage and delve in the rich cultural roots of the region.

Serene views, nature , peace and great food.

We almost got used or rather say a glimpse to the streets and the liveliness of the city , it was time to move on. Tamil Nadu is filled with culture and tradition , we had to get a glimpse of that as well.  We could have thought on nothing else but of Kadambavanam resort, one its outside the city amidst plantations and greenery and the second , its a place where we could know a lot more about the tradition , culture and eating patterns.  Madurai was originally a forest known as Kadambavanam. The history goes way back , but as of now lets get on with the resort.  Tamil Nadu is protected from the influences and the invasions , the culture and traditions that were back then are still being taken care of or just still exist. Kadambavanam aims in protecting and showcasing the same with the help of some small activities. They have a cultural centre in the premises , a theatre (not the movies), a temple, a pool, they arrange school trips, engaging activities , puppet shows etc . When there's a bigger group they arrange special activities or can mix and match according to the requirements.  Coming to the rooms , they are individual cottages amidst greenery and mango trees. A few issues with internet connectivity and signals but that gives you some quality time in nature. The rooms were neatly done, clean and well maintained. The best part pof the room for me was the open top shower area. Like absolutely amazing. A shower to remember.  You have sets of the activities, restaurant menu and a few others in the room. My personal recommendation would be to explore a little of the unexplored which you cant find in the city.   Our lunch was at their restaurant. They have indoors and outdoors. The restaurant and its food has a really interesting story. There is a pictorial representation of the Samudra Manthana on the wall. The basic aim was to provide food that is meant to satisfy the soul. Basically it includes food with all different tastes and the harmony of various ingredients that are meant to be good for the body. They also provide buffets according to your requirement. The land back then was and is low on water , resulting in agriculture of various millets, it wasn't suitable for rice. Our lunch was on a Banana leaf , we had a wide menu . I tasted a little of everything. We had nethilli fry (anchovie), Mutton sukka , kari soru (mutton curry mixed in white rice), garlic rice , paniyaram omelette, papad, eral curry (prawns), rasam , sambar . raita, potato and peas curry, Naatu kozhi ,mango , banana chutney, jack fruit , soya bean urundai etc. Everything was spot on , healthy and also absolutely tasty food. I cannot pick any like the best because I would end up picking almost everything. The serene views are another bliss, the restaurant site is built on the highest point in the entire area of the resort. You have some excellent views all around. We left to Madurai in the evening but our heart and soul were still there for a while. It was an amazing experience all together.

Kadambavanam is a holistic and traditional experience and stands out !!!

30 Kms from the city on the foothills of Alagiri Hills, towards Natham, is located this holistic and nature-friendly rustic resort named "KADAMBAVANAMM RESORT" which we stayed on day #3 of our Madurai Food tour. Aptly captioned to be "Temple of Tamil Traditions", this resort tries to bridge the closeness to Mother nature and slowly disappearing Tamil traditions in all possible forms of festivals, beliefs, cultural traditions, and even food. Food is the religion of Mother Nature and it has to be adaptive of the vegetation in the region. Hence any regional cuisine plays a big role in its authenticity based on what grows in the region. This resort as we checked-in at midnight didn't excite me much than being dark foresty place to reside in. We checked in and I found the rooms to be individual cottage homes which gave all the privacy you need and it had all basic amenities. As it dawned after a good night sleep, I woke up to hear the chirps of birds and greenery everywhere in daylight. Surrounded by mango trees everywhere, the whole aura of being amidst nature kicked in. The place offers much more than stay They offer a lot of packaged experiences including the tour of the property which we took post freshening up. Manager Mahesh walked us through the 23-acre property and first, we visited their temple with an array of deities properly maintained and performed pooja traditionally on a daily basis. Also, they seem to celebrate all Hindu festivals in this premises without any pinch of modernization impact which impressed me. Next, we went into their auditorium which by itself was very huge and the ceiling artistry immediately caught my attention. It's all depiction of various childhood good-deed stories depicted in a single frame including King Paari sacrificing his Chariot for a jasmine creeper and many more. The owner being an architect himself has designed this model and I love the traditional values depicted in them as they say "a picture speaks more than a 1000 words". The hall does host a lot of cultural events and media celebrations and also used for corporate packages to entertain the guests and also at the same time inculcate the importance of rural cultural forms. Also, special mention of the cottage room we stayed has to be shared. #1 - their naturistic Shower (open-air style) and that was a shock for me at first but then it doesn't get more natural than this, with birds chirping, natural breezing winding by, your otherwise ordinary shower becomes an experience. Don't miss this and also each room has an artistic depiction of core values from various scholars who have shaped Tamil literature, culture, and society by itself. The artwork again stands out to show how unique Tamil artistry is and how simple but yet the effective depiction of a serious thought can be conveyed is still magical. In a nut shell, the property is a city by itself where you are transported to another aura of being close to nature and culture.

    Check in Shenanigans

Bait and switch place..they tell you one price and when you get there tell you that is significantly more because of some mystery "tax" that is listed as "commission" on the invoice.. Much better places in Madurai to spend your money and time

    Eco paradise

Kadambhavanam, eco resort-a piece of paradise!!! A must visit resort, especially if your family outings/ breaks/vacations/trips includes a pet. I have not seen a more pet friendly resort than kadambhavanam!! And,it is because of this and a host of other factors, that our stay in kadambavanam was beyond compare! The resort is set amidst fruit trees and mango groves, and comprises of cute cottages that spell comfort, while peacefully Co existing with nature.Rooms have all amenities befitting a 4 star status.. Clean, well maintained, and a bath space which opens above to a glorious sky view. Food is exactly what you would expect, to match the ethnic environs and the byline of this resort, which is" a temple of Tamil traditions".Delicious, finger licking.. Kudos to the chefs. And this food would be incomplete without a mention of the service personnel and their immaculate hospitality, truly befitting the glorious Tamil tradition where every guest is treated as God. A piece of paradise on earth, with an awesome view of the rolling hills,. the plains below, with strains of popular Tamil music floating lightly from the villages below...what more can one ask for!! While sipping delicious filter kappi on the sprawling lawns or by the side of a swimming pool with the best view that has to be seen and experienced by all! I'm Going to make this resort a regular place for a family vacation.
