Good Enough For An EmperorThis hotel was good enough for the emperor of Japan when he visits town, so it was more than good enough for us. Jyoseikan is an elegant Japanese style hotel/ryokan in a large modern building. It has spacious tatami rooms with service fit for an emperor. The hot baths on the roof are excellent. Rates included an amazing dinner delivered to our room as well as breakfast. Access is easy from the railroad station by the tram that departs in front of the station. Transfer at the Harimayabashi stop to the west line and get off at the Masugata stop in front of the hotel.

No-go zone for non-smokersKyoseikan's number four rating in Kochi convinced me to splash out during our recent stay. Our standard Japanese room was spacious and well-appointed, and the staff were helpful (little English, but it didn't matter). But that's where it ended. The foyer was large but quite tacky, with beer exhibits among other things. Breakfast, which was included, was certainly not up to the standard we had come to expect in Japan. In fact, it was poor enough that we didn't bother eating it after the first day. The worst thing by far, however, was that we were on the hotel's non-smoking floor, but I spent the whole time consuming anti-histamines to counter the effect of the smoke. The bedding and flooring didn't smell of smoke, so I suspect it was coming through the air conditioning. This ruined what would have otherwise been an okay stay.

Very Nice HotelOur family stayed one night in late July at this hotel. The family room is spacious and clean with all the bathroom essentials. Car parking is free and Although the staff is speaking limited English but they are all very friendly and helpful. We had the most wonderful dinner in this hotel with most delicious food in so many courses. The serving staff was even trying to google translate into English when she had difficulty to communicate with us. We really appreciated her friendliness and hospitality. The hotel has both outdoor and indoor onsen on top floor whereby you can see Kochi Castle at night by pushing a button which is very creative. It took us around 25 minutes to walk to Kochi Castle and Hirome Market from the hotel. There is a tramway in front of hotel which we didn't utilize. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone for a relaxing and happy stay.

Just wowThis may well be the fanciest hotel I have ever stayed at, I was not surprised when I found out it is where the Emperor stays when he visits Kochi. The tatami-style room was as big as my whole two-person apartment in Tokyo, and had a perfect view of Kochi Castle. I wiled away a good hour sipping tea and looking out the window, very relaxing. There was a huge selection of yukata to wear in the room, but I think it was the baths that really got me. Not only is there a massage chair (again, overlooking the castle) that is free to use, but at night if you press a button THE ENTIRE CASTLE LIGHTS UP!!! I mean seriously, how awesome is that?
