    Wonderful

Best hotel I have ever stayed in my whole life. Top quality throughout. Great value, staff, facilities, rooms. Go to the 31st floor and enjoy the rooftop swimming pool. Great views of the whole city and they even have a 150-power telescope set up on a sturdy tripod. I love this hotel.

    International name, domestic outcome

For the foreign traveller, Qiqihar is a relative backwater in China and the choice of quality accommodations is hardly expansive which means that this hotel is probably as good as it gets in this town. Luxury hotels in China seem to earn their stars from the chandelier count and this one is no exception but it is slightly better than 4-star average for China. The front desk was friendly and competent with adequate English for the basics. We were initially consigned to a smoking suite but the acrid odour had us out of that one promptly and efficiently. Given the relative conditions of the suites, we suspect that the non-smoking floor (12) rooms have probably been the least used in the hotel. The good: our Leisure Suite was reasonably spacious, quiet, clean and comfortable. A Leisure Suite is set up with a dedicated majong room but as that held no interest to us it was a handy room in which to work on our laptops, watch TV and it provided an extra half bathroom. It also provided for four breakfasts, so we were able to invite some friends to join us on that count. The king bed was firm but comfortable, the bed linens clean and crisp and there was enough variety of pillows for each of us to find a favourite. Everything expected was provided and some of it worked as expected see below for what didnt. The bathrooms appear to be more recently renovated than the living quarters and were adequately roomy and worked OK for most operations. The included wifi worked well on all our devices. Breakfast is a good quality buffet spread of Chinese and western selections all taken in a pleasant restaurant overlooking the city square. The not so good: the suite décor looks to have taken its cues from the bunker school of interior design. The cave-like effect is amplified by the relatively modest and shaded windows of the suite which were also grimy. The building is perhaps two decades or so old and although in reasonable shape for a mainland Chinese hotel of this vintage its still a tired property overall. Whilst the bathrooms look OK on first blush the fit and finish is very poor and the hot water pressure is, well, unreliable. Even with the anaemic pressure a substantial portion of the shower water will make its way onto the bathroom floor. Be prepared to sacrifice plenty of towels to render the bathroom usable after showering and the towels were made of some special water-repellent material which was like trying to dry yourself with a plastic bag. The annoying: common to many hotels in China, the air-conditioning has a neat little control panel (two in our suite) that lets you adjust the environmental settings to your hearts content but, in the end, you can only control the fan speed and the AC output is whatever has been decided by a higher authority. During our late September stay the weather was mild so the suite stayed tolerable and it did have some openable windows. But that may not be so during less temperate weather.

    Nicest Qiqihar Hotel

As far as I know this is the nicest hotel in Qiqihar, still not expensive compared to the international hotels in bigger cities. Room was clean, staff are friendly and the breakfast is good. Shopping is close by with an underground market, night market, malls and coffee shops all within walking distance. Quite a nice park just down the road too, although the lake/river had been drained for repair (I guess). Still looked ok in the snow.

maybe above average for china - still decent by intl standards

great location, in a busy commercial area. wasn't sure what to expect, having looked at some websites ahead of time. expectations are always low for chinese hotels but this one was decent. the kids (my most strident critics) were satisfied. that means the beds were clean and comfortable and wi-fi was available.
