ExcellentAdventures
A Well Kept SecretWe stayed at the Holiday Hotel in Kaohsiung for five nights ( www.jchotel.com.tw ). The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the Kaohsiung Train Station/Kaohsiung Train Station Metro. When you leave the station area, walk south on Zhongxian 1st Road (also referred to as Jhongshan 1st Road) until you reach Cisian 1st Road. Turn left on Cisian and walk about three blocks until you reach Zhongxiao 1st Road (also referred to as Jhongsiao 1st Road); the Formosa Hospital is at the corner. The Holiday Hotel is located on Zhongxiao 1st (Jhongsiao 1st) Road on your left. We contacted the hotel prior to our stay and received a map showing its location. We booked a room via Agoda and got an outstanding rate by prepaying in USD. Our room was quite spacious with a double bed, table & chair, dressing counter, flat screen TV, built-in hot water dispenser (with complimentary tea/coffee) and a mini-frig. The bathroom was also large and had complimentary toiletries (i.e., soap, shampoo, bath gel, toothbrushes, comb, etc.). It included a bathtub but there was no shower curtain (we had to use care not to get the floor too wet). The A/C was great and very much appreciated with outside temperatures near 30 degrees (90 degrees Fahrenheit). The only negative we experienced was an occasional smell of sewage in the bathroom. This was quickly eliminated by turning on the bathroom fan. The problem isnt isolated to the hotel as the same odor is often in the streets. So, it seems the city has outgrown its sewer system. The hotel also had two washing machines and two dryers in the basement for guest use. During our stay there was no fee for their use! The hotel also provides free wifi internet access. We checked-in with Cindy and she was very efficient and friendly. Cindy is very knowledgeable and speaks English quite well although she is a bit shy to use it. Throughout our stay, we relied on her for guidance with regard to our touring. Other staff members were also helpful but their English language skills were more limited. Breakfast was served in the in area across from the Reception area. It was a self-service buffet but staff did remove used dishes from the tables as they accumulated. The menu varied daily but always included rice porridge (congee), two stir fry dishes, eggs (scrambled or poached), breakfast meats, toast, rolls and cereal. There also was a self-service espresso machine. We ate breakfast at various times (it was served from 7:00A-9:30A) and at all times the dishes were kept hot and replenished. It was a great way to start the morning. The hotel doesnt have ice cubes so we walked to a nearby 7/11 on Cisian Street to purchase them and keep them in the freezer section of our mini-frig. Theres also a good grocery store (cash only) on Cisian Road just beyond the corner of Cisian Road and Jhongshan 1st (Zhongxian 1st) Road if you want snacks, beer, noodles, etc. The hotels location makes it very convenient for touring. By walking to the metro, its easy to access all parts of town (i.e., Gushan Ferry, the Dome of Lights, etc.). In addition, we were able to use the metro to arrive and depart from Kaohsiung using Taiwans High Speed Rail. We were the only Westerners at the hotel during our stay. Hence, our titling this review as a well kept secret. The hotel offers a great location, a great breakfast and a great room at very affordable prices plus it has a helpful and friendly staff. We think its a very good property!

DZEBORAH
Nice place, nice area.We really loved that this hotel was across the avenue from the Marsalis jazz club. It was also just around the corner from a decent night market, so we had a lot of distraction for our 2 days there. The hotel staff were very nice and helpful with knowledge of basic English. Free coffee is available in the lobby. The rooms were a fair size, for Taiwan, and the bed was comfortable. One odd detail to the room was that there was a window by the bed - with shutters- allowing one to see into the shower. (Just in case there's nothing on T.V, I guess!) It was overall a pleasant experience.
