Superb Location and HotelThis hotel is within easy walking distance of the Drum and Bell towers, Lama Temple, and Confucius Temple. It is situated in a Hutong that has numerous bars and restaurants within a short walk and it is not that far from the Andingmen subway stop. The hotel itself is extremely quiet. Did not hear any outside noise in my room. Oscar, one of the front desk personnel, spoke fluent English and was extremely helpful to me with local knowledge. My room was beautiful on the inside and well maintained with all necessary amenities. They provided the option for a western or Chinese breakfast. The hotel is somewhat difficult to find the first time so here is how you find it from the Andingmen subway stop. Take the north west exit which is exit A. When you exit you will be facing East and will see the North East exit across the street. You want to go right which is South to Andingmen Dajii street. Note that there is a roundabout which you have to veer around on the right. After about 5 minutes of walking you will see a sign pointing left that says Confucius Temple. Will then see on archway on the left over the cross street. Go right on the cross street. After a 10 minute walk you will come to a cross street where you will see a building that has a blue sign and the building next to it has a sign that says ". King Yue Bar". You want to go right. After a short walk, take a left on the first cross street. It will say Shalou Hutong on a corner building on the left. Ji House will be down roughly 60 meters on your right. There is a sign on the wall to the left of the red entry doors.

Great Courtyard Hotel in Beijing's Happening Drum Tower NeighborhoodIf you want a very traditional experience without paying the price of the Orchard down the street, this is it. This is a traditional four courtyard home (siheyuan) in the heart of the very happening Drum Tower area. This is a bit more expensive than a non-courtyard hotel (we paid $160/night in October, peak traveling time for BJ) but well worth it if you seek to understand what it is like to live in a Siheyuan. The owner is a very nice Chinese gentleman, who gives you a very filling free breakfast, and can give you advice. His English is not bad and you will be able to communicate. Beds were comfortable and the place was relatively clean. The bathroom though is a bit small. But it is in the room which is great. One fun thing - the owner rents out the courtyard during the afternoon to young couples for their wedding photos. So you sometimes come back from touring beijing and there will be a young couple in their wedding dress having their pictures taken. It's actually a lot of fun to watch the happy couple. One thing to note is that because it is off a narrow road in one of Beijing's hutongs, a lot of the cars cannot get through to drop you off or pick you up. I was traveling with my senior citizen father and sometimes we would have to find the car or the driver would meet us and we would have to walk to the car. Not a big deal for most people, but if you have someone where walking is hard, the narrow hutongs might not be ideal. Also, at night, the hutongs around the drum tower really perk up (it's a happening spot for a lot of expats and tourists) and a lot of cars and motorbikes drive around you on streets that aren't always well lit. So seniors and small kids, it might be a bit of a challenge and stressful. A number of great restaurants are around the hotel and you are within walking distance of Houhai, lama temple, Nanluoguxiang (go early on a weekday to avoid crowds) and other great locations. And to get to any of those spots, you walk through some of Beijing's most beautiful hutongs. So it is ideally located. Internet in the room though was spotty.

Excellent location for the forbidden city and the other main monuments. the boss has found an excellent driver for the Great Wall who was not to expensive. All breakfasts are excellent. The room was plaisant and the bed very comfortable. A very good address. Alain and Dominique

Great experience in a small courtyard hotel very well located! We really liked our 9-day stay at Ji House. Oscar and all the staff (Lin and Penny) were very friendly and helpful. They were very responsive to our needs and made it easy for us to enjoy Beijing and the hutongs. We had a very good Chinese breakfast (or western style) every morning and excellent coffee. The room was spacious, clean and very comfortable. Ji House is located in a quiet hutong, very close to many restaurants, bars and cafés, shops and attractions such as Lama Temple, Confucious Temple, Drum and Bell towers, which makes its location very convenient, especially when you want to discover hutongs by foot. We highly recommend this courtyard hotel.

Perfect Staycation and StayThe bed is SO comfortable; better than 5-star hotels we have stayed at! This was a surprise for us in China, as the beds are often hard. The manager was so nice. He made the kong (traditional Chinese bed) into a comfy bed for our daughter. He is currently renovating a few bathrooms, but ours was good.. It's close to stuff (5 min walk) like shops, French grocery store, and good Yunnan restaurant, but it is in a quiet spot... A rare find in Beijing. There was a family of cats who visited while we hung out in the courtyard. Highly Recommend!
