UNIVAC
BarebonesWe stayed at this new-ish hotel in late May, 2017. We did not choose the hotel nor did we pay the bill; our relatives did. We stayed two nights. It was conveniently located to where we were going. The lobby of the hotel is devoid of any chairs or sofas and certainly doesn't look very welcoming, nor does it encourage anyone to hang out and chat. Entering our room on the 3rd floor (3302), which had a view of Sunrise Peak, we immediately found a tube of toothpaste left by the last occupants. The toilet and shower are close together and there is no tub - that is, they both share the same floor; thus when showering, the toilet gets all wet. So, if you want to go to the bathroom, and you've had a shower recently, you have to put shoes on, otherwise you'll get wet sox/feet! The towels provided are small by North American standards, which we understand is typical in S. Korea but not our experience until now (we've been staying in Seoul prior to Jeju Island). The worst part upon entering the room was the brightness of the lighting... the owner/operator(s) have installed super-bright LEDS in the rooms and it's VERY harsh. I'd guess they're 5000 Kelvin... which is definitely not warm and cosy at all!! There was a TV on one wall but no chairs nor desk. The walls are totally bare! We had two queen-sized beds which were fine. The trim at the top of one of the beds was coming apart. There was no storage, nor suitcase stands, except for one narrow floor to ceiling, open cabinet beside the bathroom/shower. At the bottom, right at the back, of the cabinet was the lone fire extinguisher. Not easily found in an emergency as it was in other hotels we've stayed in here in S. Korea. There were 4 coffee mugs in our room and two plastic glasses. None were clean. No coffee or tea but there was a kettle. There was a small fridge, too. No complimentary water but there was a 7-11 on site where one could buy 500ml and 2litre bottles of water (550 and 1100WON, respectively). The only documentation or guide in the room was a tourist map of Jeju Island. Nothing on how to use the TV, phone (e.g., how to call emergency services), a map of where anything was in the hotel, etc. I can't complain about the lack of English as English is not an official language in S. Korea. The point is there was no doc in ANY language! There's a large pool in the centre of the hotel, which we did not use. It appeared to be very well used and there were plenty of kids around. When the maid cleaned up after the first night (we stayed two nights), she did not make the beds but did leave clean towels and performed some basic cleaning. My wife said the bathroom could be cleaner. If you want a breakfast, you have the option of 'continental' or Asian. Choose the Asian. We had continental the first time and it was simply coffee, either a large bagel or quesidilla with rice and cheese, and a salad. This was NOT self-serve so no seconds. You'd better be a light eater, as we are! The Asian breakfast was buffet-style, all you can eat and you should be able to find something to eat. Apparently, the free breakfast is for the first day's stay; you have to pay after that. Summary I readily admit this review is biased in that I am used to North American, European and Australian accommodations. Thus, I rate this place bare bones - basically a modern roof over your head. The word sparse would be kind; "bare-bones" in terms of features and service is more like it. While I don't expect hotels to fawn over me, I do expect some basic service and amenities. The hotel even expects us to sort our dirty dishes after our Asian breakfast! If you're on a budget, this will be fine but I've been there, done it, and I like a few 'luxuries' in my life, like a cup of tea in my room. I've stayed in $40 shacks in the outback of Australia that provided more luxuries than this hotel! Pay as little as you can to stay here and lower your expectations.
