  Hidden paradise

  I must state at the out set that I am biased as I have fond memories of the hotel as it was the social spot of my youth. We chose the venue to have a birthday party and we booked 13 rooms for friends and family to stay over. The ballroom is the real deal, cosy yet spacious and well-equipped to ensure that we had a great party. The food was amazingly delicious, ranging from western through to Indian dishes. The service was excellent and you just have to look up to have a waiter at your side ready to please you. The biggest surprise was the 10 boutique rooms, above the main hotel. It was spacious, well appointed, tastefully decorated and just so comfortable after partying hard the whole night. To end of a great stay we enjoyed a delicious feast at breakfast.

  Very unreliable hotel

  We booked on the 29th March 2019 and paid in advance at the Island Hotel in Durban for a wedding to check in on the 9th August my sister in law also booked in January to check in on the 8th Aug and she got called on the 5th Aug to be told we don't have a booking anymore as they have a group booking. I never got a phone from them and wouldn't have known anything if she didn't tell me. When I called them they said they where going to call me and this was after 12pm they then said they want to put us in a place further from where we booked and away from the wedding house a place of their convenience and my sister in law said she called them 2 weeks ago to check if everything was still ok and they said it was all 100% fine and now a few days before we go down to Durban we have no accommodation and with it been a long weekend we to get accommodation took us half the day to sort this problem out and costed us double the amount now. They are rated as a 3 star hotel but their customer service is pathetic. The Manager name is Dion who hasn't even gotten back to us once to ask us if we came right with our accommodation I called today to check how long our refund is going to take as we gave him the banking details yesterday and he was off today and no one even responded to the email to say that all is in order and it has been done. They waited from January and March to tell us that we don't have accommodation because of this group booking which they took. How do you double book in the 1st place after taking our money from 2 people we know of so far.

  Once upon a time a legend

  About 50 years ago, my parents had my christening at this establishment. Over the years we have come to this establishment for a variety of events. Now I came back this time after many of living out of town with mum and wife. This establishment has been renovated and we went their for tea, the place was not geared for tea trade but they tried. Unfortunately the experience was not what we expected. The visit was nostalgic but nothing more.

  Date night out

  Enjoy eating the bunny chows that are on offer. Meals overall are priced ok. The dinning hall is just that. Like being back at school. Not a Restuarant feeling if that is what you want to experience. The wait staff are friendly overall.

  Unbelievably Disappointing

  Recently had the disappointing experience of eating at the infamous Island Hotel, normally known for its delicious bunnies. The curries were tasteless and bitter. We ordered X 3 bunnies, 1 mutton and 2 chicken, we literally had a couple mouths between us. The waitron came to ask us why we were leaving so quick and despite me telling her that the bunny was terrible which she communicated to the manager, the managers attitude was it was what it was and nothing could be done, no apology or concession provided...no interest in customer satisfaction. It is not cheap to eat out and I will certainly not go to the Island Hotel again and certainly deter everyone I meet from going either ...
