I thought this wasn't bad at all

I stayed at Manpa in Wakayama which was just 5min down a long winding road from Seaside Kancho. Rating these two is like splitting hairs. They are Sister companies and have very similar services. All in all a nice quiet stay here similar to Manpa. Onsen and restaurant are nice but food was slightly better at Manpa. The facilities appear newer and refurbished compared to Manpa. The price is slightly lower at Kancho which makes it more attractive. Overall a nice quiet stay if you want to rest and have solitude during your vacation.

Relaxing and Quiet Hot Spring Hotel

This small hotel is situated near sea side. There are around 20 rooms and the view from room is beautiful especially sunset. The beds are in Japanese style (tatami). The hotel has been renovated, room is clean and tidy. Only drawback is bathroom is quite small. The hotel package included breakfast and dinner. Food are in delicate Japanese style and delicious. Hotel staff are very nice, they tried their best to communicate with us in English. Appreciated. Hot spring area is not big but you can see gorgeous seaside view. There is private hot spring area but we didn't ask how to book it. The lounge area is comfortable with free coffee and tea provided. And there are three massage chairs that I can relax while enjoying nice seaside view. chair In general, this hot spring resort is a good choice if you want to enjoy quietness and don't want to be packed with many visitors. And this resort is near city, you can take bus from city centre and get off at the hotel entrance. Hotel also provides free shuttle bus service to city and JR station.

    Great staff!

Thank you for maintaining traditional Japanese hospitality standards. With more and more international tourists, I have found staff at many ryokans/hotels feeling tired and not as friendly or helpful as in the past. However, I could feel the staff at Kancho truly trying their best to help even if their English isnt great. The food was nice and the rooms mostly have a good view of the harbour and sunset. Its a short drive from wakayama station so it would be best to come in your own car. Do note that it is built on a steep cliff with a narrow road so be careful when you drive up. Also, the bottom 2 floors dont have elevator access so suggest not to bring big luggage with you if it can be avoided.

    Lovely views

This place would have been extraordinary in the 70s when it was built. Located in an area that feels like a world of its own. Beautiful views from the rooms and common areas. Very lovely staff who were patient with our language barrier. The bath facilities were really nice and we didnt feel strange as foreigners. The hotel could definitely use some renovation to bring it up to par with the bathhouse. Its not a cheap place to stay, but the breakfast justified the price tag. I wish dinner was available, but it wasnt and we were unaware until checkin. Dinner must be a seasonal offering. Its very traditional. Its not set up at all to accommodate western visitors.... but that was a large part of the charm!

Slightly out of the way, but very peaceful

This accommodation felt very traditional; when we were there, the guests were mostly Japanese and the staff only spoke Japanese. That being said, I would recommend this accommodation if you have a car. As this accommodation is located on a hilltop, you will wake up to a beautiful sight of the sea and the port. The public bath in this accommodation is also beautiful, with both an indoor and outdoor bath, and the outdoor bath overlooks the sea and the port as well. The outdoor bath was very unique as well. Though this place is about 20 - 25 minutes away from the town, if you have a car, it is not that far away and there are many convenience stores and restaurants / fast food outlets which open lat (to satisfy those late night cravings and needs). The accommodation makes one feel relaxed, in a very traditional setting, and it is also value for money.
