Nice Rooms, Poor ServiceMy girlfriend and I, looking to get out of Chiang Mai for a weekend, decided to stay here for two nights in February. As far as boutique hotels go, this one is pretty mediocre. The nicest thing about it is the rooms, which can be fairly large. Most appear to have a balcony attached; we enjoyed sitting on ours. Also each one has a different design, which is interesting. We enjoyed the time we spent in the room, though it would have been nice to have some screens on the balcony doors or windows so you can enjoy the fresh air and not have to keep all the doors and windows closed at night to keep out mosquitoes. No fans either, only air conditioning. Outside of the rooms though, the atmosphere isn't great. One gets the impression that this wealthy family decided to build some quirky rooms on a piece of land they own and then put some cutesy things on the lawn and decide that was good enough. Service-wise though? It felt as if we were being "permitted" to stay on their property, but that we shouldn't expect much else. We didn't feel welcomed at all. An example: Immediately upon entering the room I found a long hair on the bedspread. Then, when I pulled back the bedspread, I found some hairs on the sheets (even one that was unmistakably a pubic hair). When I told the manager, however, she assured me that the sheets were always changed and that was it. Assuming that's true, I have no idea how these hairs could have still been stuck to the sheets and bedspread, but at a minimum it probably would have been good form to at least offer to change the sheets for us. Or offer us another room (almost all the rooms were vacant). She was polite in informing me that the sheets were always changed between guests, but that was it. No offer of a solution to a customer finding something repulsive on the sheets just minutes after arriving. We were given no choice but to just accept this and brush the hairs off onto the floor. There is no restaurant there, so one is forced to travel outside the grounds for all your meals (there is breakfast in the morning, but very minimal and bland). This might be ok in some locations, but where Is Am O is located, there's not much around to choose from. You will definitely need a car. Chiang Mai is full of quality boutique hotels at reasonable prices, but this isn't one of them. The family's approach to running a hotel appears mostly superficial, which may work fine for getting customers to come once, but isn't going to be sustainable in the long run. For a transit hotel, this might work. For a boutique hotel at a higher price point aimed at couples and families? Nope. Fortunately for them, it appears they don't really need the money or care if anyone stays there or not.

What A Great Place and Friendly Staff!!I live in Chiang Mai and will be returning to this wonderfully unique hotel. Beds are comfortable and the rooms are really cool. The food is limited, but quite good. The atmosphere is very original and has lots of character!

Out of the ordinary lay-outThe place is a family-run business. Its main feature is the original and diverse design of each of the rooms it offers. Each varies in size, shape, color, decoration. A visit on their website will give you a comprehensive view of such diversity. It creates a tale-style atmosphere that suits family holiday-goers. If you're an adept of Le Corbusier style, it may not be your cup of tea but if you're ready to take it as a kind of amusement park, you'll be delighted. Kids love it. The rates are reasonable and service is good.

Living in an Artwork.Driving along the main road from the north-west, not wanting to drive into Chiang Mai, we saw the sign to Is Am O Resort and went to look. A few blocks off the main road along tiny streets, well signposted and worth the effort. The friendly welcome and discounted price convinced us to stay. Loved the quirky decorations and paintings, always something different and fun to see, both in our gorgeous clean room and around the garden and small lake. Staying there is like living in a fairy tale painting. Kids would love it. Food was a bit limited with a basic breakfast and no restaurants close by, so a car is a necessity. We stayed in January 2014. A delightful resort. A highlight of our trip... and I'm still folding elephant towels.
