    A little Diamond in the rough

    Ok where do I start? The hotel itself is tired, like us all we all get old there is no hiding this. It needs some TLC, This said it is spotless. Every morning the staff were there on the button, cleaning, mopping you name it. The rooms were cleaned daily with fresh sheets and towels to boot. We where lucky enough to be on the top floor overlooking the pool and sea however the mountains on the other side are just as pretty. The staff could not do enough to make our stay more enjoyable. They were friendly and approachable always smiling. The breakfast was limited for choice but what was available was plentiful, bread, cheese, eggs, tomatoes etc and all fresh. The pool was cleaned daily and looked clear. The beds available were not the best but again we never went without one. On our final day after speaking with Pablo on reception he offered us a room to use as we had to check out of ours at 12 and was not flying till 11pm at no extra cost. Free air con, safe and fridge. If you want to watch tv and sit in your room all day go somewhere else. If you want a clean, friendly traditional base to work from then this is it. Dont expect 5* when your paying for a 2*. Keep your mind open and go to relax and you will enjoy.

    Cheap and cheerful

    Ok... so if you are one of these people that want to pay peanuts and get a five star hotel and get disappointed when you dont get what you wanted then its quite simple...just dont book here. We used it as a base, to shower and sleep in so it served us really well. The hotel is clean and staff are wonderful, so helpful and cannot do enough for you. Beds were changed and new towels every day. The cleaners do an amazing job and nothing went missing... i literally left everything out. Aircon is free and so Is the safe!!! Like where do you ever get that anywhere??? We hired a car to explore the island, youll miss out on soooo much if you dont. Its such a beautiful place. My fave was Argostoli. Can I please give a massive thanks to Christos who sorted all this for us and gave us so much information about the island and where to go. My only complaint was the breakfast. I just think they catered more for German people than they did for English. I dont want cake or salad for breakfast. There was no sausages or bacon or anything so that was a bit disappointing. I ended up just going for coffee and some boiled eggs. (Nothing outside seemed to open before 10am). However the bar at nite was really cheap 3 euros for a glass of wine! The guy that worked there was so lovely and friendly too. The swimming pool was big with a kids pool too, couldnt tell you what it was like as we like the beach but it looked really clean. Lots of restaurants around and a supermarket not far. The airport is literally 2 mins away and you will be in the flight path. Personally i found it fascinating seeing the planes come in but if youre a glass half empty kind of person then again - dont bother. They are loud but dont fly at nite so wont disturb your sleep. The shower is a bit of of joke. Its not attached to the wall and you have to stand in a bath smaller than your feet. The suds come back up out of the drain in the floor but you kind of get used to it. Would I go back? Absolutely!! The place is run down but its clean and the staff are what make it. Thank you to you all and we will see you next year!!!

    My Greek home for over 30 years

    I love the Irinna - it is a good, clean, basic and an honest Greek 3* hotel that does not pretend to be anything else. It has been my home to return to since I was a kid in the 1980s. Read on for a full review happy to answer questions by message Context A couple, 30s, seeking sunshine, pool, good food in Greece. What the hotel is An excellent base camp to either explore the island or relax by the pool. The hotel wont break the bank which leaves more spending money to enjoy a number of local tavernas. What the hotel is not In either Spain or Turkey, modern and furnished by IKEA, expensive, or 5* luxury. Greece is more expensive than it was in the 70s-90s; therefore, expect to pay more in Greece than in Spain for the same standard of accommodation. The hotel is not for anyone that plans to spend most of their time in their room. Bedrooms These are very basic but clean. Rooms include a mini-fridge, air-conditioning, and TV (with limited local stations). They do not have a kettle or hairdryer. The furniture is quite 90s, but you are unlikely to be choosing Kefalonia vacations based on their supply of the latest IKEA range. Be warned, the beds are hard which is good for front and side sleepers, but I appreciate are less comfortable for back sleepers. You can ask for extra pillows from reception. Bathrooms These are also very basic, but clean despite being worn. You will find a drain in the middle of the bathroom. I dont know why people are surprised by this it is common in Greece and quite logical as it allows the floors to be easily cleaned. Water The water is clean but due to the mineral content doesnt taste nice and can cause discomfort if you are not used to it. OK to clean your teeth in, but best to drink bottled water which you can buy from the bar on mini-market down the road. Pool and facilities The pool is one of the main attractions for me. It has a normal shallow end (1 meter) and a proper deep end (2.5m) so you can actually swim in it (and play about). In my experience, there has always been enough sunbeds (pool towels are not provided). It may be different in August, but other months there feels a lot of room. The pool is open from 8am to 9pm. The pool gets the sun all day, but there are a number of umbrellas and trees around the pool that provide shade if you prefer. Poolside Taverna The pool bar offers a good range of food and drink during the day, up until 4pm. This is a little early to close, but the main bar takes over and is only a little further to go. Restaurant the food options are limited, but the quality is good for what you pay for. Breakfast is only cereal, toast, croissants, cold meat, fruit, yoghurt and tea/coffee. Lunch is served from the taverna and offers a good selection of Greek snacks and bar-meals. Evening meals usually consist of two or three options, but are supprisingly tasty for a buffet. Main Bar Either air conditioned or veranda seating with friendly service and a wide variety of drinks and cocktails. Location The hotel is somewhat in the middle of nowhere. The village area is Svoronata, but you will have a 20 minute walk in any direction to find it and neither the hotel nor the village could be described as a resort town. The AIRPORT, be warned the hotel is very close to the airport which is a catch 22. The planes do fly over the hotel on their approach to land. This can be noisy, but Kefalonia is not a busy airport - the noise only lasts about 15 seconds and there are no night flights unless one is delayed. If you have children or are a plane spotter, you will love it because it somewhat adds to the excitement and breaks up the monotony of drinks, swims, ice-cream and sunshine. If you are not a plane spotter, you can just watch as everyone else raises their head above their books (or iPads) and follows the flight into land. Staff The hotel runs on a small team of hard working and lovely people. The hotel has a history of the same staff returning each summer for many years. You will get to know them all very well as they will be there throughout your stay. They are unobtrusive, polite and friendly. When you leave, you will feel you are saying goodbye to family. Eating Kefalonians are very proud of their food. Whereas some resort parts of Greece have allowed themselves to be swayed into the tourist taverna mentality of feed them fast, keep them moving and give them menus with pictures; the Kefalonians will not expect you to rush your food or insult you with pictures on the menu. They will be happy to recommend dishes or explain what they are if you are unfamiliar. There are about 8 or 10 local places to eat, each with a dish they do better than another one. I highly recommend the Acropolis (see my user profile for reviews of the others nearby). Car Hire there are several firms nearby, all of which are competitively priced with each other. However, minimum hire is for 3 days and are not always available next day. So, you may need to plan ahead if you want a specific category of car. Beaches There are two beaches near the hotel. Ammes which is the tourist beach and Ai Helis beach which is more secluded. Ammes is access friendly whereas Ai Helis is a little further away and not access friendly which is why it is quieter. Getting to the Hotel The hotel is 10 minutes by taxi from the airport. However, all taxies operate a minimum journey charge of 20 Euro (2019). Your tour operator may include transfers, but taxi is probably the easiest and fastest method for 2 or more people. Busses it is about a 30-minute bus ride to Agostoli (capital of the island) and costs 2 Euro each way. Timetables change several times throughout the summer months, so check with the hotel reception for up to date information or the KTEL bus website. Overall Built in 1974, the Irinna is dated, but it retains the original charm of a hotel built at the beginning package holiday jet age in fact, it hasnt changed very much since I was a little kid. This is an indication to the reader that you leave this hotel with happy memories and you will return there at various points throughout your life, not because it is fancy and is the best money can buy, but because it is home. I have stayed in much more luxurious hotels, but the Irinna is home. Feedback to the hotel Thank you for a wonderful holiday in July 2019. It is a shame the tennis courts have fallen in to disrepair, but the biggest thing still missing from the hotel is the old roof-top bar. With spectacular views all around the hotel and the welcome cool breeze on hot or humid summer nights, I can only implore the hotel owners to reconsider opening this facility again!

    Good value but in desperate need of updating

    There are both positives and negatives about the Hotel Irinna. Lets look at the positives firstly: - The hotel is ideally located for people looking for a quiet and relaxing time on the South part of the island. At only 2 kms from the airport, its very accesable. It has a lovely, good sized pool that was welcoming for a cool down dip with limited sunbeds and umbrellas available. There are beautiful beaches nearby with crystal clear water with Ammes Beach and Ai Helis the pick. There are plenty of Taverns within walking distance of the hotel too (I'd recommend O Milos) which made eating out easy. There is also a good bus service which will take you to Argostoli with a stop by the hotel gates. Lovely views at the front and rear of the building. Breakfast was really good with a large continental spread and the option to eat inside or outside. Also I cannot fault the hotel manager Kristos who had a 'nothing is too much trouble' attitude. very helpful and even took us into Argostoli so we could go on a boat trip. At 37 euros per night or £259 for the week for 2 people for bed and breakfast, in mid September where temperatures were still in the 30's, this was a bargain. Now for the negatives: - There is a sense that the hotel is somewhat dated and in need of an upgrade. Photos online show of a place that 'once was' and not what it 'currently is' which left us feeling somewhat disappointed as the photos are possibly 20 yrs + old. There was a slight sinking feeling when we arrived as it didn't look like the images used online to promote the hotel. Lush green grass, brilliant white painted walls and an outside bar gave it an exclusive, health spa / tennis club image from the photos. But alas, burnt out dry grass, an injection of yellow/orange to the balconies and with the bar no longer in use, it left us with a very different opinion. If you want a flat screen TV, tea and coffee facilities, a sumptious soft mattress with lots of pillows and efficient shower facilities then this is not the hotel for you. With old style 14" TV's that are as wide as they are deep with no English channels, a rock hard bed with only one pillow each, a 3 foot bath with a hand held shower (funny because if you foamed up too much in the shower then all the bubbles came up through a drainage vent in the bathroom floor), an air conditioning unit that needed a bit of cardboard to prop open the vent to stop it pointing at the floor, a noisy table top mini fridge, exposed wiring, 3 shades of pink on the walls, underneath the beds looked like they hadn't been swept for days, along with an army of ants and sockets that blew when you plugged 'anything' into them (iron, phone, hair drier, straighteners) it emphasises the need for some basic maintenance and updating. The hotel is also directly on the flight path for the local airport with low flying aircraft throughout the day, though this didn't bother us and we never got board of seeing the planes coming into land. (times usually between 10am and 9.30pm) The reality is, we were informed during our stay that the hotel is up for sale and as such makes you understand why it feels tired and dated as they wait for a buyer before any investment is made on updates or essential maintenance issues. The hotel has such great potential to be great again instead of just good or ok. The only other downside was we were stung with a surprise final bill before leaving for a daily 'city tax'. I thought all fees and costs were paid for upfront when we booked online so was somewhat disappointed at this especially as the receptionist was unable to explain what it was and why we had to pay. Need to do your homework on this! However, all in all and for a budget holiday......and if you can deal with the basic accommodation issues, this really isn't a bad place to stay for the money. You could pay more for far less in the capitol.

    Uncomfortable stay

    We booked this hotel last minute and when we arrived it was so old and run down I was kind of frightened at what Id booked. When arrived in the room the place was in need of some serious tlc. Bathroom had a hand held shower, and it was all chipped. We also had a bad storm when we stayed, the wind was so bad it blew our shutters open and we had to wedge bed against them to stop them from flying open. Pool was ok, the sun loungers are hard plastic & uncomfortable. Long walk to supermarket if your self catering. One good thing you could pay 2 and get into kefalonia city centre which offered shopping & we got a chance to watch turtles being micro chipped by charity workers. All in all wouldnt recommend if you want to relax without worry.
