Lovely stay with lovely staffThis was our chance to experience a traditional Japanese hotel and it didn't disappoint. It's not small and quaint, but it does feel very traditional and the staff really care about making the experience a treat. Our room was beautiful (we took the sea view Japanese suite) and we loved the way it was transformed from sitting to sleeping seamlessly. The food was great - not all to Western tastes perhaps but that was part of the charm. The spa was lovely too and completely empty, and the kimonos were fun too. We were the only non-Japanese there, and while we were out of season, it felt like it was an OAP retreat for everyone else.

A highlight of the holidayNeeded to find a place for three days near Shimoda but did not have high expectations. It was stunning. A five minute walk from the local station. A welcoming reception. The room was massive, the ocean view was magnificent, and the futon was very comfortable. The photos barely do it justice. Just had to be a bit careful with some low beams. Swam (mid November) from the beach directly below the hotel. An easy and scenic 20 minutes stroll into the nearest town (Kawazu) which has two good supermarkets and a couple of good restaurants. Walking the other way takes you into a fishing village which also has a restaurant or two and en route you pass an interesting bar. The hotel staff were pleasant and helpful and spoke English. A Japanese emperor once stayed here and more recently the Prime Minister of Malaysia so it is good enough for me......

Sound of wavesNice property on beach in Shimoda that less expensive than most inn neighbors; tatami rooms have ample space and mod cons; bath and rotemburo on 3rd floor are standard - sauna included - not certain about water origin - and does have ocean view as do most rooms; ground floor directly connects to big beach area that has lifeguard and not crowded despite public access; however, food is brutally expensive - dinner for family more than an overnight, and while rooms clean it appears during COVID hit on hospitality industry to be operating at break-even amenity services. Nice stay but not exceptional; parking and bus service to station.

Comfortable Ocean Front StayThis ryokan hotel, like many in Japan, have lived its glory days and got stuck there. The hotel itself has a yesteryear charm about it, still looking for the most part, up to standard and relatively well maintained. It is the lack of staff which lets this place down. For the price you pay per night its disappointing not to have your basic needs met. The dinner course meal included local delicacies such as Abalone, Red Snapper and seasonal vegetables, though we found it wasnt overly filling. The onsen facilities were good including sauna. For an ocean front property there is a disconnect between the hotel and the beach in front. Take advantage of an ocean front room if you can, as the view of the coast is stunning. The location is good along the Izu Peninsular, though if you do decide to stay, one night is enough.
