FANTASTIC L'AQUILAThe Duomo Hotel is a special little place for me. The room we got was quite spacious comfortable bed. We specifically asked for a room with a balcony view over Piaza Duomo. Beautiful place were in the evenings families gather to socialise. So it's great to sit on the balcony with your feet up sipping on one of the many cheap local wines watching the sun go down. At night time it can get quite noisy in the early hours of the morning church bells and dumper trucks collecting rubbish and the market starts early in the morning on the Piaza exept on Sundays. Plenty of good restaurants in the area. But, don't be suprised if not many speak english or even english language menus. This is what is so great about L'Aquila you absorbed by the whole experience. And it's great to lose yourself in the twisting streets. We also seen a local production of Romeo and Juliette it was fantastically done in simple enough surroundings for about 5 euro a head. Tourist information is directly accross the street from the hotel. There was no air conditioning in the room. But, we did have 2 balconies so we could create a draught. The staff seemed very pleasant although not much conversation flowed as they didn't have much english mind you why should they. Our Italian is terrible I hope to fix that myself.

Great Locationwe paid 80 EUR for a double, without breakfast. The room was pleasant, with two little balconies that gave out on the main square. The only disadvantage is that the market starts early every morning and the stand that sells CDs woke us up at 8am by playing its wares very loud (but stopped again after 20mins, so we napped some more) The bathroom was relatively large, and the staff friendly. Overall a pleasant stay. The cafe on the groundfloor of the same building is a great place for a morning cappuccino and croissant. There is another great cafe on piazza Duomo, on the on teh right side if you face the Duomo, called Grand cafe.

Unimpressive HotelUnlike other guests we were unimpressed with the Hotel Duomo. Like l'Aquila in general it has a run down feel to it. Rooms are shabby and could do with a lick of paint. We stayed in one with a view over the piazza but the room had a dark feel and was not somewhere we wanted to spend too much time. It would not actually take too much money or effort to turn this into a really nice hotel as the building itself could be great with a little thought and care. Generally the hotel has a dated, uncared for feel. "Shabby Chic" - but missing the chic. Breakfast is not good either, very little choice, nothing much fresh and on one occasion none of the staff seemed to be bothered. Breakfast is served in a nice vaulted ceiling cantina, probably the best part of the hotel. L'Aquila is a lively town with a youthful feel to it. It does, like several other Italian towns we have visited, have a "seen better days" look to it though it is full of character and interesting to walk around with lots of bars and restaurants close to the hotel. We stayed during August and the local 'Festa' was on all week making it a colourful and busy place to be. This is great though some nights the concerts in the square went on a little late. The town is set in some stunning countryside only a short drive from the Grand Sasso mountains. Parking is in a garage quite close to the hotel, though because of the nature of l'Aquila's narrow one way roads, its a bit of a trek. If you are planning on parking a big car there manoevering into the lift to take you down to the Duomo's level in the car park could be a problem. All in all - the hotel is not good and very overpriced - though we did get away with parking for free when it should have been 10 euros a day I think
