A luxurious hotel with lots of activitiesIt is a large hotel with very proficient staff - the ones who served us could all speak good English. On the advice here, we tried arriving easier (4pm) and leaving as late as we could (9:30am) given our itinerary - but to enjoy all the hotel had to offer we thought we needed even more time! Before dinner at 7pm (with a kid with us, that's as late as it would have been manageable), we visited the informative and beautifully presented museum (allow one hour) and had the famous sand bath - but because of the number of steps involved, little time was available to properly enjoy the genroku onsen (very large with numerous pools), before we were due to have dinner. Every item of the dinner was scrumptious and the service was impeccable. We had breakfast before dawn so that we would still have time to enjoy the other onsen and participate in the mochi-hammering event for the first day of Lunar New Year at 8am. We then walked around the garden at the waterfront and relaxed on the hammocks (despite the wind!). When we checked out we admired at the sakura in full bloom. The professional photo taken of us at the sand bath was nicely done. The room being a smoking room, did not smell of smoke at all (very important to us). Having said the above, the hotel may not be for you if you are after a boutique/niche experience - hotel guests arrived in coaches.

Ibusuki Hot sand bathExcellent experience. Remove your shoes, put on provided slippers. Go to segregated locker rooms. You remove your clothing, wear a robe (yukata) , take off your slippers .then go to the sand bath tent. lie in a shallow space. Then they cover you with the warm, black, volcanic sand. We were in a tent since it was still cold outside, still winter. But in good weather, you may be lying on the beach. You may stay as long as you like but usually most people stay 10-15 minutes. If youre young and healthy maybe 20 min. Its very detoxing and relaxing. Wifes arthritic fingers became more nimble. Then you get out and can sit in the hot spring outdoor bath with view of the ocean and mountains. We stayed another 20 min. Then Went to the shower room , showered, put on a clean yukata then went to the locker room to change back to our street clothes. Great experience! Great deal from Holland America cruise ship. Visiting Kyushu with friendsWe book this hotel from reading a blog. Ours was a short one night stay and we wanted convenience. What was attractive to the wives was the on property sand bath which is an extension from the onsen baths. On arrival, we took a taxi having missed the shuttle bus. The taxi ride was about 7-9 minutes and about Y1,200 due to the traffic lights for such a short distance. The property is huge. Staff members are courteous and there were quite a few English speaking assistants. We walk around the property a bit as it is really big. The hotel is quite well patronized. We met many who are in wheel chairs who come for the sand bath. Hope it works well for them. The onsen is of a decent size. Modern is architecture as compared to our earlier stay at Kurukawa Onsen. From the onsen, you need to pay for entry to the sand bath at Y1,080 per pax. The sand bath is for about 10 minutes and we were covered whilst dressed in our yukata. It was an experience which is also available in the beach in other parts of Ibusuki. Dinner was good and once again a lot of pork. This time we had to sit on the floor which was uncomfortable for me but we survived the night. Breakfast was sitting on chairs with tables. I will revisit Ibusuki if the chance present but will likely check out other properties.

In desperate need of renovationsIts a huge hotel by the shore. It takes 15 minutes to walk from the room to the onsen. The onsen is big but really old and it doesnt feel very clean. Massages are very average. Rooms are spacious but dated and ours did have not have any view. Dinner was good, but breakfast was a sad story in a huge self-service buffet area.

Gorgeous hot spring hotel in IbusukiWe stayed at this hotel as part of our group tour, and I must say the tour companys choice was fantastic! Hotel itself is situated on a vast piece of land with lush gardens. The hotel is enormous (it was quite a walk to the bathing area), and it seems to be a popular Japanese wedding destination. In addition to the usual bathing and hot spring bath areas, there is also a sand bath - a must try. The hotel even has an art museum attached which showcases beautiful Satsuma artwork; and attached to the museum is a fine Italian restaurant. All in all, a most relaxing place to stay with a definite resort feel.
