  An old hotel that has seen much better days

  This is the first time that I feel like the reviews on tripadvisor.ca didn't accurately reflect the quality of the facilities and service of a hotel. The Hwa Du Hotel is an old hotel with very dated decor and facilities. I'm going to guess that the hotel was built in the '60s and last renovated in the '70s. I will admit that the hotel is kept very clean, but it has a sad neglected feeling to it. The front desk staff were helpful when we asked for help, yes, but they didn't go out of their way to welcome us or suggest things to do in Tainan. The four or five nearby chain restaurants were identified (in English) on a small piece of paper, which was handed to us by staff without explanation upon check-in. Because of the lack of quality local restaurants, we took a cab into town for dinner every night which added ~NT$400 (return) to our daily costs. The hotel does offer a shuttle service to the Flower Night Market (Thursday, Saturday, Sunday only) that runs from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Unfortunately the night market is completely jammed by 7:30pm and unless you're used to it, it can be overwhelming. I recommend catching a cab to the night market by 6:00pm so you can find a place to sit when you eat, or so you can walk and eat with a bit of elbow room. The breakfast buffet is only available Saturday and Sunday mornings. It provides a decent range of breakfast options. Cereal, yoghurt, and fruit would have been a good addition. The Hwa Du Hotel seems to cater more to tours than to individual travelers. I recommend staying in a more modern hotel closer to the city center if you want more exposure to Tainan's night life and quality local eats. One more note: If you order an extra bed, be prepared for a rough night's sleep. The folding bed that I slept on was just barely as wide as my shoulders, had no mattress, had an iron bar that loved to dig into the middle of my back.

  I am sure it has seen better days though it has excellent value for your money

  Simple hotel for very reasonable price and helpful stuff. also offer free bicycle for rent if you are on holiday. over night stay can be ok but do not expect for too much as rooms are very basic. it also has parking lot in case you need it.

  Too far away from the centre. Noisy street corner

  We stayed one night here, early in May 2014. The room was unremarkable, as was the establishment in general. Suddenly, the place was awash with coachloads of VERY NOISY Mainland Chinese. Not a nice experience. Frankly, the promotion "Early Booking Saver Rate including 12% discount" GBP 40.86 (USD 67.04) was a bit high for the quality. There is a free shuttle bus at 7.30 p.m. and at 8.30 p.m. to the night market. The staff were helpful. I think there must be better places to stay in Tainan.

  Better then 3 star

  Centerally located. Reasonable prices. Good caring staff. Big rooms and all amenities. Near by seven eleven. Free coffee all the day. Poor break fast. Poor room service. They packed out bags and changed our room without permission. But it is ok.

  all good

  room was clean, staff were great. a bit far from city centre but taxis were easy to get. plenty of shops handy, just a walk over adjacent bridge.i would definately stay here again if i get back to tainan.
