    Half-term family trip

This was our first time at the Hotel Zur Dorfschmiede (HZD), but hopefully not the last. Having been to Hinterglemm on a few occasions we knew what to expect from the resort - it is a smallish, self-contained, nice village with great access into the ski area and good facilities. Quieter than Saalbach, Hinterglemm has everything we wanted. The hotel is traditionally decorated and is welcoming. The reception leads to a bar area and lounge beyond. Unlike some hotels, which can be very smoky in Austria (still can't believe this is allowed to continue indoors!) the HZD is airy and we were comfortably smoke-free. The staff at reception were friendly and helpful, although we're not really demanding, knowing the ropes pretty well. The regular barman is excellent and very attentive. Meals are served in an again traditionally decorated, wood-paneled restaurant on the second floor. Again, the staff were both efficient and friendly. The food was very good with a typically Austrian menu of salad bar, starter, soup, three choices of main for dinner, followed by dessert and cheese. There was a good selection of wines in their list and we were never disappointed in our choice. Breakfast was a gourmet affair, with cereals & muesli, fresh & dried fruit, meats, cheese, vegetables as well as hot breakfasts of bacon, eggs and even an omelette station. Fresh breads and pastries were abundant. The ski/boot room is easily accessible from outside the hotel, which although there is an internal staircase, is the management's suggested access point for guests. The room itself has a heated boot rack with plenty of capacity and lockers for skis that are keyed to the room. Bedrooms are clean and adequately sized. The bathrooms were also clean. Apres ski is a big part of Austrian ski holidays and you can follow the play-list quite well from the rooms, but the music stops at a reasonable time and we were not disturbed. The hotel is ideally placed equidistantly between the two main lifts, meaning there is only a three or four minute walk to either. There are a couple of dance-clubs and plenty of bars and restaurants should you wish a change of scene. One particular bonus with Hinterglemm is the flood-lit night-skiing (not Sunday) accessed from the U-bahn lift. This is lots of fun, with a 'proper', good length red slope culminating in the very lively and busy unterschwarzachhof apres-bar. There is a timed slalom and speed course as well as a funpark, but do keep an eye out for speedsters on the piste. My only very slight message of constructive criticism to the the management would be that the soft-rock in the morning and tedious evening ballads piped out in the restaurant are not to everyone's taste. Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the HZD. The whole experience was excellent, the staff kind and efficient, the accommodation comfortable and warm with a great location. It is great value and left us with a wish to return next time we're in Hinterglemm.

Lovely Hotel. Very Accommodating and Friendly

Our first trip to Austria and we chose this hotel. The booking staff before hand were excellent. They answered all my queries and were very easy to reach both by telephone and email. Our accommodation was huge. There was a fabulous wrap around balcony (sheer bliss) with a view of the mountains and with tables, chairs and loungers, a double bedroom at one end, a bathroom and a living area, open plan dining room with small kitchenette and fridge and then up a small flight of stairs, a mezzanine floor (with a low roof - watch your head on the solid Austrian wood). This had one double bed. The other bedroom was right at the other end of the 'ground floor'. The staff were fantastic about letting us use plates and cutlery. They couldn't have been more helpful and kind to us. Due to a mix up our first few nights were blighted by noise from a mountain biking festival... Glemmfest? Can't remember the name. Anyway if that's your thing this is the time to go. My companions had no problem with it but the noise bothered me for the first couple of nights. However, and this is important. The lady owner (sorry all names forgotten) tried really hard to make amends for this. Her priority was for us to have a nice holiday. Even before this the owners made every attempt to deal with issues like parking etc in a way that helped us out. They are very sincere in their wish for you to have a great time at their hotel and went above and beyond in this respect to ensure we had a great holiday. The Glemmfest mountain bikers left after a couple of days and although I didn't particularly care for it, my companions didn't mind it all. If you want quiet, empty streets don't go when it's on, otherwise if you're easy going and like walking among loads of fit friendly mountain bikers then book at this time. Personally, I didn't feel comfortable letting teens go back and forth to the bigger gym at the sister hotel until they'd all gone. (They tended to congregate in between the two hotels listening to the bands playing.) This was because of an incident with a drunken oaf one evening - nothing major but only because my husband and I were there. The hotel gives you each a mountain pass, which when we found out the price to get up there without it was very welcome. It's really expensive! We used it many times to go up and get fresh air and it was fabulous up there. Heavenly. Indy, the receptionist was very helpful in every respect. Even when I questioned the bill (and was wrong) she handled it very well and with patience. She was great. The first few days at breakfast were stressful due to the extra cover over Glemmfest but once he was 'back under his bridge' as my husband put it and if you get the reference, it was all calm and happy again. Management do everything to make your holiday right and it was unfortunate we were served by the same when we had our 'make it up to you meal' . We left sharpish without coffee and cake to get away, but never mind! It certainly wouldn't stop us staying here again especially now we know that not everyone is warm and fuzzy! (I never normally put this stuff in as it can be very unfair but I think in this case forewarned is forearmed. I should say my husband didn't give a xxxx about his manner, so he wouldn't have upset everyone. (To reiterate, I think it was just Glemmfest cover.) The breakfast itself was great. A wide selection of foods and you could find healthy options too i.e wholemeal bread, eggs, cereals, fruits etc. The pool complex with saunas and steam rooms downstairs was very nice and large enough for a swim. There was a funny notice on the door that actually read like 'naked' was compulsory rather than a note to just warn people that naked people are inside! But once Indy cleared up the confusion, we were good to go. I would definitely book this hotel again. The suite we pre-booked - I think called the Wolf Suite was excellent. I wouldn't go to this area during Glemmfest but that's just me. All in all I highly rate this hotel and thank the owner and staff for a lovely holiday.

    Ski trip with friends

We had a very nice trip and really enjoyed this fine hotell. Central to the slopes and the rest of Hinterglemm. The staff en people there are very kind and good. Service is exellent and the food was really good! We ate at the hotell every night. Hotell and rooms are cosy and clean. One night they had two live musicians with accordion and guitar :D they played beautiful music during dinner :) and when i came home from town later they still played a small cosy consert in the hotell Lobby :) What a night! :) I wish those guys had a cd i could buy.

    Skiing holiday with the family

The hotel is in the center of Hinterglemm and a stones throw from two of the key cable car stations. The food both breakfast and dinner are excellent. Unfortunately the rest is not corresponding to a 4 star hotel you would expect in Austria. The family room was tiny and the sitting area that was converted for the kids made it a claustrophobic experience. One of the kids bed was made by placing a lopsided mattress on top of the sofa. The hotel ski bar located in the ground floor plays loud music all afternoon long which makes any afternoon after skiing relaxing difficult. The main waiter in the restaurant was very good but the remaining staff were useless clearing tables while eating or serving food in the wrong order if not on your lap. Furniture in the reception was dated and our room was not even cleaned on one of our days. I would rate this as a great 3 star hotel with 4 star food.

    Very expensive, yet pretty standard

Honestly, I feel like this hotel is very over priced. Yes, its location is very good, and it IS a nice hotel. However, I dont feel we got anything out of the ordinary, that could set it apart from other hotels. In fact, We experienced quite a few annoyances; We had booked a family room, but when we arrived, we had to go ask the staff to not only make the beds for our daughters, but also give us towels, bathrobes, slippers etc. for 4, as they constantly (every day), kept putting things out for 2 people. We asked this, and the receptionist was even quite annoyed with us for bothering her. Also, there were only one coat hanger in the room, and as you know, one has quite the number of coats, pants etc. that needs hanging when you are on a skiing holiday. Food was nice, pool area nice, though water a bit chilly. Anyway, by all means a good hotel, but way too expensive for what you get.
