UnfriendlyWe stayed at this hotel for 2 days. We were the only guests and it appeared that the owner would rather not have us stay at all. When we paid our bill he could not even be bothered to say good-bye. Just took the money and went into his office leaving us standing there. I have been to many places but this one comes right at the bottom of the lot. On top of the room charge we were billed another 500 yen each per day for access to their Onsen, which is a dump. For the same price, you can go to the splendid Ashizuri Thermae up the hill and enjoy the view over the Pacific from their outdoor pool.

Excellent mealsI stayed here around 2004 or so. This place is my top three in Japan in regards to ryokan meals, the other two are on Shodoshima Island and Kesennuma. I paid 10,600 yen a night and had a fabulous spread of seafood dishes, including several shrimp dishes. LOTs of dishes and great variety. If you've ever eaten the dish with slivers of ika mixed with yellow fish roe, try it home made as it was served at this ryokan/hotel. Everything was freshly prepared. Both meals were served in your room. The ryokan was located a short walk away from the attractions at Cape Ashizuri, which include some temples/shrines and a walking path out along the bluff. A visit to the Cape is feasible only by rental car as it's around 3-4 hrs by bus from Kochi.

Just awful accomodation - but good food - almost! We pre-paid for a dinner and breakfast deal. It was the off season granted. We made adjutments for that. We always try to find the positives so let's them out of the way! There are two positives - Dinner and Breakfast was wonderful, and the view from our room on the 5th floor. We had a sea-view room even though we had not booked this more expensive option. We were upgraded since we were the only people in the hotel. Sunset was magnificent. The older woman who prepared our meals was both gracious and a good cook. But this is the best thing we can say about this hotel, sorry to say. And one of us had terrible stomach problems on the day we left. The room was grotty, very very grotty. The bathroom and toilet was smelly and dirty. Not since a hotel in a rural area of India in 1976 had we felt so scared to use the facilities. The bathroom slippers were so dirty we used bare feet instead. We bathed in the public bath but even here we had to scrub the taps and bowls to get by. The entire hotel is old and neglected. The manager and his wife are lovely people but they, like the hotel are too old to cope. The fire stairs were clogged up with disused furniture, the lift was half full of dirty sheets, and so on. We restrain from a blow by blow description we just have to say do NOT stay here. Sorry to be so frank.

Ocean view and lovely food, what else you needThis place seems to get very mixed reports. I stayed here 4 nights and had a great stay. Indeed, the place is old, maybe could do with some repairs and redecorating, but the Japanese style rooms are large, airy and clean! I was very well looked after and cared for, and even my laundry was done for free. The lady cooked me very nice meals every day and took big efforts in making me feel comfortable. The location is perfect for walks around Ashizurimisaki with beautiful views of the ocean. Kongofukuji temple is just 5 min. away. There is no internet but there are several places elsewhere in the village that have WiFi you can use for free. Great quality for a good price!
