    Good old-fashioned Hotel

The Hotel spreads the charme of an old Grand Hotel. Staff is perfectly nice, food is tasty, sauna is hot - good place to stay for skiing also, they do have an extra showering room in case you want to ski after check oit

    Charming but outdated

We came here on a skiing weekend just after the New Year celebrations and the hotel was pretty quiet and not a lot of guests which was nice. The hotel is old but has a nice charming aura and you can feel that it used to be a high quality hotel. The good parts: * The service and the staff is really good, very service minded, always friendly and helpful. * The location is excellent as it's located a bit higher than the main streets. You have a fantastic view over Engelberg and getting to and from the hotel is easy with the two elevators. * If you have been skiing and want to shower before you leave they provide that service * Oh and they have a great bar with over 300 different types of Gin. And then there are the bad parts * We choose half board and Im sorry to say that the dinner was not good. They provide a buffè (vegetables/starter, soup, mains, cheese and dessert) but the quality of the food is simply not that good (lack of taste). It can be tricky to find a table in Engelberg so going for the half board was us trying to avoid having to book dinner but I would go for that instead and avoid the hotel dinner. * The rooms in the main part of the hotel are really outdated, there are several images already shown by other travellers showing this. They have added a new building to the hotel where the rooms look much better. * The beds are super hard and the pillow thin (ask for an extra pillow asap as they have a limited number of them) * The walls between the rooms in the main part of the hotel are thin. We could easily hear the french couple staying in the room next door having some "adult fun" in the evening :-) * There is only one elevator going up to the rooms and it's slow so be prepared to use the stairs. Overall set your expectations right, the ski package they offer has a very good price but it comes with some drawbacks (above). And skip the half board and ask the reception to help you with booking restaurants instead.

    Wonderful staff, incredible views

What wonderful, kind staff who looked after us in very difficult circumstances and made our stay over Christmas so special .. from mum and I..heartfelt thanks. The hotel is located in a great position with fabulous views over the town and mountains. There is a very handy lift which conveniently takes you into the town. The dining area has great views and the food was plentiful and good. We would definitely stay here again.

    Friendly hostelry

Stayed recently on a work ski trip. I think the hotel is reasonably priced if you book direct (we paid a lot, but I suspect most went to the ski company rather than the hotel, which isnt their fault - but probably raises expectations). From the outside the hotel could be a grand old dame - an attractive old school facade majestically overlooking the town. And with a hefty cash injection it could actually be that level of hotel. But it clearly isnt aimed at that level of the market and thats fine of course. In many ways its a bit more like a hostel than a hotel (and certainly isnt 3 star), but thats not to say its bad. People staying just need to arrive with realistic expectations. Rooms are small with a bathroom the width of a toilet and a prefab plastic cube shower. Flooring is 30 year old orange lino (in the bathroom) and pink carpet (in the bedroom) with 30 years of burns and stains in them. Beds are small with very hard mattresses and pillows as thin as the sheets. There is a tv, but I never found a working channel. The lights kept flickering on and off (I reported it but it carried on the same the next night). The walls and doors are thin. The bar and terrace are very nice (though the bar closed early both nights we wanted to go so we didnt get to try it out). Its about a 20 minute walk to the ski lifts, though there is a free shuttle from the station (about 10 mins from hotel reception). The breakfast was suitable sustenance but nothing more fancy than that. Staff were friendly. So all in all, quite acceptable depending on what you are looking for (ie if you are looking for a cheap place to crash rather than a base to luxuriate).

    Fabulous view

The thing about this hotel is that of you like anything vintage, retro or appreciate the elegant charm of times gone by you will LOVE it. If you put views and charm over luxury and modernity you will love it. I adored this hotel and will definitely go back, and it has put a smile on my face lasting days. However, if you are a critical rype lookingfor sumptuous luxury then it's probably not for you. The website photo of the terrace was what attracted me to book this hotel, and I am so glad I did! The hotel is built up a hillside, and because of this I reckon it has the best view in town. I pictured myself with a G&T looking at the mountains and it didn't disappoint. Put your phone away, and lose yourself in the view! The hotel itself has kept all it's original features and charm, and all around are echoes of a bygone age. For me , the bits that have been recently refurbished are lovely, the bits that haven't yet are acceptable because of the whole feel of this hotel. I was prepared for the room to be quite basic, and as we were in one of the older, not yet refurbished rooms it was. However it was very clean, comfortable enough and had toiletries, tissues etc. However, it also had a balcony, and what a view!!! We were on the fourth floor and that extra height magnified the beauty of the place. We sat out on the balcony all night and watched the fireworks go round and round the valley for the Swiss National Day celebrations and it was magnificent. I pulled my bed down so I could leave the balcony doors open and fall asleep looking over at the mountains, and from that vantage point enjoyed watching a thrilling thunder storm, breathing in clean, fresh air and listening to the sounds of cow bells and countryside. We had breakfast the next morning which was fine - a few cooked items, cereal selection, toast, fruit, cheeses and cold meats. The hotel is easy to reach by foot from the train station (3 minute walk) and the lift system to the hotel makes it easy even with luggage. The staff were lovely and very friendly. The service was patchy in terms of not a lot of staff so couldn't get a drink at the bar when I wanted to, but I think this is becauae of the current Covid 19 situation. The staff were very helpful when they were free. When I booked the price was the cheapest around and yet I feel was, in it's way, one of the most memorable places I have stayed (in a good way).
