Old spaStopped for the night while traveling North from the Matera area. Just drove in, saw the sign and pulled in for the night. In its glory it must have been a real attraction as a spa. It is feeling its age. Looks as though some renovation is taking place. Didn't look like the place was busy except for locals visiting the spa for treatments. The room was clean but very dated. It had wifi but I had the stand in the hallway to get reception. No English spoken here which is okay but keeps the communication down to the essentials for us. Good room rates and free parking but the breakfast is nothing to write about. Didn't visit the spa area but the prices looked reasonable. Lots of attractive marble floors and large lobby but overall a ho hum place.

Wonderful surrounding. The hotel is set in a wonderful mountainous area just a short drive from Melfi. We arrived amid flooded roads, thunder and lightening and as we pulled up the electricity went out. The reception was at a loss due to the weather, but showed us to our room and apologized for the situation. The electricity came on within a few hours with the sound of church bells ringing. The room was very clean and adequate for the price. I did not expect more. The breakfast was a pastry, yoghurt, fruit and excellent coffee. The view from the terrace looks onto the castle of Melfi in the distance. They have a faucet with the spring water in the garden. A pity that the upkeep of that area is lagging. We left with warm fond farewells and were even presented with caps, which are coming in very useful for the rest of our trip. We will not forget Julio, Lorenza and Antonio. One tip is that they do not speak English so you have to have your phrase book at the ready. We had a great dinner at the Oasi Giallo Verde a restaurant in Melfi on the Via D'Annunzio. It takes up part of a church. Again only Italian is spoken, but the cuisine is to die for.

Friendly, and well runWe were introduced to South Italys hospitality at the Hotel Terme di Rapolla (Springs of Rapolla) at Rapolla, Basilicata. The room was tidy, clean and quiet. Breakfast was typically Italian, with superb caffe. A tap is available outside fed by the spring on the premises. The water provides faithful regulars its healing properties. The hotel is newly renovated, from what we could establish. Buy some of their olive oil. We were presented with caps on our departure. The rates were very reasonable and our entire stay was most enjoyable, with staff very considerate. From the patio, the views of Melfi and its Frederick II castle can be seen, even at night the highlight of the Hotel. Unreservedly recommended.
