At least the towels were niceYou know that hotel in the center of every city that's a bit neat up, has a liquor store attached - and is just generally dodgy? You know, the one you wonder, "who stays there?" Yeah well, that's the Hotel Squamish. The Hotel Squamish is from another time. It's been a warm summer, thus far. However, there is no A/C in the common areas, and there certainly is no A/C in the guest rooms. My room was oppressively stuffy. Oddly, there is an upscale restaurant, attached: The Salted Vine Kitchen & Bar. It seemed busy. - It was clean(ish). - The TV was essentially a small computer monitor. - There was a small fan, which sort of provided some relief. - The towels seemed new and fluffy. - With some hefty renovations, it could become a cool, boutique, hip and happening hotel. There's not much I else can say. I want to be fair... The takeaway is... consider other hotel options.

Has really gone down hill over the past year.I've stayed at this hotel quite a bit over the past 3 years. 2-3 years ago the rooms were always clean and well maintained. While the building is old with its quirks ("character"), the hotel had done a good job at keeping things up. There were new mattresses, and recent decor upgrades. Each room had everything a traveller really needs - a microwave, fridge, shower or bathtub, small TV, WiFi, and most importantly: A really comfortable bed. It also had a self-serve laundry room with a working washing machine and dryer. There were little details too - such as an assortment of DVDs out in the hall for the in-room DVD players. It felt like someone actually cared about the place. Perhaps a "Budget Boutique" hotel. The location also could not be beat, especially for the price - right in Downtown Squamish and within walking distance to anything one might need. Unfortunately things have changed for the worse here. In both my visits this year (Feb and Aug) the hotel seems to have developed a more run down, unmaintained and unclean feeling. In my room this most recent visit I noticed that the toilet had not been cleaned - there was still very obvious "splatter" in the bowl from the previous guest. The bathtub curtain rod had a used washcloth hanging from it; and the floor felt "sticky". The woman who checked me in seemed stressed out and detached. The collection of DVDs in the hallway was in disarray, and the laundry machine wasn't working properly. The room had an odour. I had a similar experience last February where I noticed cleanliness issues, but thought it was just a fluke given the past good experiences at this hotel. It seems the bed sheets and towels were still at least clean. My hunch is that somewhere between the first two years, and this past February there has been a management or ownership change. In any case, whoever is running the show now clearly does not or no longer cares for the overall upkeep and image of this hotel and that's unfortunate. While I used to see the same staff members each stay, it now seems there's a new set of faces every stay. This is another sign there's a management issue - in the first 2 years I was staying at this hotel I'd see the same staff members every visit. The cleanliness issues really drove up my anxiety around COVID-19 risk; and I won't be taking the chance on this hotel again until the pandemic is in the history books.
