Best Staff/Customer Service, Average Onsen and MealAverage meal and below average onsen, I was having quite a negative impression of this hotel until I was sick and tried to have my breakfast. Having a high fever, I lost appetite to all dishes on my table. I asked the waitress for a bowl of porridge. The old lady tried to explain to us that the meal were set and on top of it, the hotel restaurant does not serve porridge, it's not even on the menu. Both me and my friend were not sure if she could understand the concept of porridge, we told to add water to rice and cook it. She then saw me very sick, told us that she would check with the kitchen. 15 minutes later, she brought me a set of porridge. It was nothing close to just "add water to rice and cook it", it was the BEST PORRIDGE I have ever had. The porridge was prepared in proper bowl with lid and there were pickle served alongside. I finished the whole bowl with tears in my eyes. I was touched by the old waitress lady. She came back again after serving the porridge, just to check if everything was fine with me and my porridge. She gave everything she could to a very sick tourist. Shame on me that I did not ask for her name or take a photo of the porridge. I will remember that bowl of porridge deep in my heart. Thank you very much, Hotel Shuhokaku, for taking care of me.

Great food & location!Conveniently located near subway stations and within walking distance to Kiyomizu-dera. Loved the beautiful breakfast and dinner! Enjoyed everything they served! Room is spacious with tatami floors, and I liked how this because we could have privacy and didn't have to worry about the hotel/ryokan attendants to come in and prepare your futon or meals. You eat with other people in a restaurant at a set time. It's a good cross of hotel & ryokan. You have the privacy of a hotel & a nice relaxing space & great food of ryokan. We enjoyed a private onsen time too. I'm giving a 4-star instead of 5 because I kept seeing hair on the floor and on futon.... Other than that, great place to stay.

Nice and convenient locationIt is a nice hotel with traditional Japanese style rooms and meals. If you want some authentic Japanese experience, try it. But if you look for something high end and exclusive, then this is not your choice. I have been to the same chain's hotel at Mt. Fuji areas and it is much nicer than this one.

Too small room but satisfied with serviceStayed in "Shirakawa" room on the forth floor. Way too small room so for only one person can bearly sleep in. If you have some kind of phobia for the small, closed space (without window) then avoid this place. Otherwise, the restaurant service and the food was outstanding for its value. I guess Kyoto is too popular among tourists so has pretty limited option for the resonably good priced accomodation, so I guess it was justifiable for what I paid.

When in japan, a must do to try a traditional style hotelHaving travelling as family we wanted to experience the traditional Japanese style hotel and this is where this Hotel fits the bill. We had a family room which had ample room able to sleep 4 adults comfortably. Mattresses were provided so you dont have to sleep on the floor. The provided dinner and breakfast was delicious filled with traditional Japanese cuisine. Highly recommended
