I expected more for what I paidSelect inn has certainly seen better days. It was a little shabby. There is a very reasonably priced breakfast but we didnt have it preferring a set in the town area. The room however was quite large, though the bathroom incredibly cramped. Since Id paid a similar price for a better hotel in Tokyo I was a little surprised. The staff were pleasant. The hotel is about 10mins walk from the station, there are certainly closer hotels. The centre of Aomori seemed a little quiet and run down which I wasnt expecting. It is well located though to attractions such as lake Towada and surrounding areas, Osorezan and the Shimokita peninsula. However if you can Id recommend staying at one of those places. Its actually a long way on public transport. There are some very nice looking onsen in the Towada area and Shimokita looked great.

Fortunately only one nightOur travel agent told us this was the most expensive hotel he had booked for us in Japan, so we were expecting something special. This seedy establishment is on one of the main streets and ¥700 worth of taxi ride from Aomori station. The front door is on a very tight spring. There is only one lift, papered with instructions to valued guests, that stops automatically at the 4th floor to help crime prevention. Getting to the front desk on the 4th floor, our reservation was taken by the clerk and obviously took some finding - he then told us that we had a smoking room. I told him that we dont smoke and had reserved a non-smoking room. He argued with me in Japanese, I argued back in English. Finally his colleague intervened and offered a room on the 8th floor which was non-smoking. It may be true that no one has smoked in it recently, but neither has it been decorated recently, so there is a miasma of tobacco in the room. The room itself is tired, but the sheets and towels are clean. The capsule bathroom is tiny! I feel sorry for the housekeeping staff who have to try to coax cleanliness out of such tatty fixtures. We were not able to adjust any air conditioning so the room was very warm. One of the lights did not work. But the bed was okay. Breakfast for us was toast, bread rolls and coffee. Rice and other Japanese fare was also on offer - no complaints there, but not to our taste. But for one of the most expensive hotel rooms on our tour of Japan, we are at a loss to know why it is so tacky.

Smelled like cigarettes, cramped, windows in some rooms don't openI would not recommend this place for someone with asthma. The rooms obviously used to be smoking. It was also unseasonably hot, but they'd shut off the AC. The windows in my room would not open (safety reasons), so I had to take cold showers every night before bed. The bathroom is incredibly cramped. On the plus side, the service is good and the rooms were clean. The breakfast is actually very good and I highly recommend it.

Old dated property but staff has made guest happyA dated Retro Inn, one building by itself. My impression on the 1st day upon checked in was very disappointing. However, after 4 nights there, the image improve and like it there. At least 10 to 15mins walk from Aomori JR train station. Hotel is still using the manual keys, tap water we need to adjust manually to reach a acceptable temperature we want. I cannot see any CCTV in the corridor of guest room. This really worries me. Lights were too dim, very depressing. Rooms are small with odd spaces. We are able to make use of the odd spaces to put our luggage. Bath/toilets are even smaller. And usually we can smell a sewage smell in the bath room. What impress us is that though it is an old dated inn, Hotel has facilities for washing machine at 300 yen and dryer at 100 yen per 30 minutes. Japanese breakfast included was delicious and nutritious. Staff are always humble and friendly and informative. We can go to the lobby for coffee and bread (on the house) between 3 to 10pm. Rooms are clean and as days passed we forgot about the old property as staff are all cheerful and makes us happy. If hotel did not provide free breakfast, then the rate paid may not be worth for this hotel. I would only recommend this hotel to someone who needs breakfast and has a male companion and vigilant person.

You get what you pay for...A twin bed, bare walls, a computer screen as a TV (pay extra for TV card) and modular RV style toilet and shower is what 5500yen buys in Aomori. The upshot is Its a 15 minute walk from the train station. In a country that is known for being safe and especially anti-theft; it was disconcerting to see the warning sign saying the elevator stops at the 4th floor reception for crime prevention. Another sign plastered inside the elevator announced a broken boiler and limited hot water. The curled sides of the paper suggested it had been there awhile. The room was cozy and served its purpose.
