Off the beaten tourist track....This hotel is perched on top of a hill with amazing views over the small islands around Hiroshima. It also has an open air hot bath sharing these views. From the outside it looks like a concrete block, the rooms were spacious, though an aroma of boiled cabbage does pervade the rooms. The foyer looks like an airport waiting room The food was good, each evening 10 courses, served at quite a high speed. Breakfast was a buffet, also quite good. Very little English spoken here, though the staff rose to the challenge in a friendly way. There is absolutely nothing to do near the hotel or on the island. At the base of the hotels cliff is a small beach with good swimming, though no facilities like beach chairs, we had good weather and sat on the beach and swam. We picked this as something away from the more touristy developments, just to experience a different bit of japan. The staff and other Japanese guests seemed amazed to see us there and were quite keen to talk. To get here entails changing yo a local train from the Shinkansen line and then a small bus ride to the port and then ferry. The hotel picked us up. We enjoyed it here. The views are stunning. Difficult to say that this is a hidden gem. The hotel needs a bit of updating. Probably not really worth detouring to visit unless you have lots of time or want to visit more of the islands.

Lovely old hotelWe arrived while biking the Shimanami Kaido during bad weather. It was foggy and cold which made the warmth and hospitality all the more impressive. A young staffer showed us our room and explained how to dress for the various activities and dine. Immediately, we donned our yukatas and headed for the hot baths, or onsen. How wonderful! Then we experienced a fantastic traditional meal--delicious food, many courses and attentive service. One course was live abalone! It was tasty but a little intimidating to watch the creature barbecued in front of us. I didn't know all the things we ate but everything was well-prepared and delicious. Sleeping in our room on sweet smelling tatami tucked into our futon beds was deep and refreshing. We left the next morning but would have enjoyed staying another day.

A gem on the islandThis is one of the best hotel/ ryokan that I have stayed. The room is homely and the staff from the bus driver, to the reception, dinning and others makes you feel at home. We got the seaview room and nothing was better to have a cup of tea watching the sun set over the waters and surrounding island. This hotel also has the mini electric car that we rented to sight-see around the island. Dinner was very good. We had grilled abalone, that was a pleasant surprise. Outdoor public onsen had seaviews and you could gaze at the stars. Great place to relax and unwind from the city. Highly recommend.
