Cute and unique, but not quite there yet.

We needed a place to stay for one night while we went to the TT races in Assen and stumbled across this lovely town. I strongly recommend a visit (1-2 nights at most). This hotel is quite interesting and quirky. Its modeled after an old grand hotel with lots of fascinating features (including crazy staircase). The hotel has a front and back portion with a lovely quiet and romantic courtyard. We didnt eat here but people said it was a great restaurant. The hotel is located near the middle of this cool town yet our room was quiet. Air conditioning would improve the experience and/or a window that opens. The patio door opens but who wants to sleep with an open door to a public balcony. But they did include a fan. Luckily it was June and not to warm. Some basics were missing such as water bottle, refrigerator, coffee and minibar. And while body wash can do a lot, shampoo and conditioner are standard in hotels these days. We asked for toothpaste at the front desk, but they ran out and unfortunately, breakfast was not included. All in all, it was an ok experience.

    Nice location

The hotel is right in the city center with a garage to park your car, which is nice. The staff is friendly and the rooms are nice enough, if a bit rugged around the edges. They could do with a fresh coat of paint and the replacing some of the worn details like the slightly cracked bathroom mirror and the bathtub's worn shower nozzle. The rooms were otherwise well kept though - clean and neat with large windows overlooking the yard below. Breakfast was great and a gluten intolerant person has nice choices to start their day.

A charming hotel in one of the old Dutch cities.

The Schimmelpenninck Huys, an old mansion in the heart of the city of Groningen, has the charm of bygone years, but it is fully renovated and offers all the modern hotel facilities. We had a cosy room and it was cosy, albeit small, but it was modern, clean and the bathroom was spacious and similarly very clean. The hotel has a beautiful courtyard where it is nice to sip from a glass of wine. The dining- and breakfast rooms also have the charm of a an old renovated stately house. The staff is very friendly. And finally, the hotel is located a few hundred yards away from the central market with its many cafés and terraces.

    Relaxing stay

We saw an offer in the newspaper for 2 nights at the Schimmelpennick Huys, including breakfast and one dinner for around 80 euros per person. We have stayed at this hotel previously and loved it then, so we booked this great deal almost immediately! The hotel is situated in a very grand and imposing building in the city centre of Groningen. The building has a ton of history and I like that the various phases that the building went through are still acknowlegded in the decor. It has some gorgeous spaces, decor and a lovely secret garden. I did notice this time around how badly maintained some parts were. Both the communal areas as well as our room had aspects that were outdated and in need of fixing. I think this is a great shame and it does make the overall experience less pleasant. Our rooms was fairly large and, aside form the areas that need fixing, spotless. The decor definitely did not match my personal style but everything was well thought through and executed in one particular style. Also the room had everything we could ask for. Lovely beds, an enormous vanity, chairs, TV etc. The bathroom, which included a shower and a bathtub, was spacious and I did like the double sinks. The shower was in desperate need of fixing, but enough said about that. I had no trouble sleeping at the hotel as it was mostly fairly quiet and dark. On one occasion there was a party in the main hall. This wasn't a problem to me, but I do think it would have been polite if we had been informed before hand. The breakfast buffet offers a large variety of breadrolls, sandwiches, crackers, cooked options, deli meats, cheeses and sweet toppings and ofcourse beverages. I thought it was very extensive and had something to everyone's taste. I did expect the bread to be a bit more refined though, as it comes straight out of the bakery that is attached to the hotel. Also we once ate dinner at the hotel as it was part of the package deal. First and foremost: our waitress was incredible. She had a very busy and complex shift as part of the rooms were transformed in preparation for the party. She was incredibly hardworking and did a great job explaining all of the dishes to us. We received some flavoured breads and butters as a starter and after that some entrees. I did enjoy the flavours in this tremendously. As a starter we both took the vegetable cheesecake. It was an interesting concept but I did miss a certain bite and the texture was a bit sloppy. After that we both took the main course with veal cheek. This dish was pure perfection and very well cooked. Eventhough, this wasn't actually on the menu, our waitress did manage to bring us chips as a side dish. I was happy with the options I chose and it was nice to try dishes that I normally wouldn't have chosen, but personally I would have liked some more accesible options. This time around I had a lovely stay again, especially considering the value for money. I do hope that they'll be able to do some renovations and reparations before my next visit though!

Unique property right in the middle of everything

This is a very neat, unique property built out of an old estate home, with all of the rooms being individually decorated and shaped differently, which adds a lot of character to the place. We enjoyed our time spent here and although the COVID restrictions meant that certain amenities were not available, the staff was friendly and helpful except for one particular worker who continually made it more difficult than necessary for our family to eat together and apparently thought it was her duty to make up and enforce arbitrary rules to make customer stays at the hotel less appealing than they could or should be with her constant unfriendliness. Everyone else was great. We would stay here again as it was very centrally located and provided easy access to walking around all of Groningen.
