  £40 for a night without pre-booking.

  This was the cheapest place I found by taking a walk around, looking for a bed for the night. I found the place to be clean, quite modern, Japanese style rooms. The guy on the front desk was good, helpful and spoke decent English. I asked for a non-smoking room and although they didn't have one, the room I got didn't smell of stale smoke. I could also keep my bag in the foyer, and felt comfortable doing so, for the morning whilst I explored.

  Good quality/price value!

  I was a bit sceptical when I arrived in this hotel and I was positively surprised: nice and clean Japanese bedroom, warm and nice staff, and a very good Japanese breakfast. Very close to the ferry, train station and all the restaurants (5mn walking) it was perfect for a night in transition between the islands and the rest of Hokkaido. However the building is not very nice and overall the inside is a bit oldish.

  Another good budget hotel

  All the hotels I stay are between 4000 and 5000 yens, and they all provide good value. This one has sea views and pleasant japanese style rooms. Also very quiet. On the minus side, wifi doesn't work well, better free Wifi at the station.

  good value for money

  We booked a Japanese style room here, which was nice and warm. The futon beds have thin mattresses but we didn't find this problematic. The bedcovers were warm - very important given the very cold weather in Wakkanai. Staff didn't speak much English but were helpful and friendly. They let us borrow a plate to use with the microwave. They also served a hot drink in the morning in reception but we were rushing to catch a train so didn't have time to drink it. The hotel is a 5 to 10 min walk from Wakkanai station. Free wifi worked well for us.
