Charming hotelThe highlight for us was our dinner in the Michelin 2* restaurant. We had booked in the other restaurant but decided to push the boat out so luckily were able to change our reservation and get a table. We had the menu Schlossberg, 6 courses of such delicious food, full of beautiful flavours and so well presented. The staff were charming and the service was excellent. I would highly recommend that you try this restaurant. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Unfulfilled promiseThis is a hotel with almost 100 years history and, together with its gourmet restaurant, a reputation that extends far beyond the Black Forest. Expectations are therefore high and disappointment perhaps inevitable. But first, the positives: the hotel spa has undergone a major recent renovation and, in addition to an indoor pool, sauna and hamam features extensive wellness offerings in a lavish and inviting ambiance. Our room was generously proportioned and, although rather dated (also the bathroom), featured all mod cons. Plus the breakfast buffet was both extensive and qualitatively excellent. The items for improvement: the reception process was not four star (as the hotel is rated, at least by the main entrance). Examples include: our luggage, having been removed from our car, was not taken immediately to our room as requested (since it contained valuables) but, unbeknown to us, left unattended in a corner of the public reception area while we took tea in the hotel's café. Also, a request to have someone park our car was greeted with the question as to why we were unable to park it ourselves. Further evidence of unprofessionalism was on display over dinner. A five course gourmet dinner had been ordered at time of room reservation when the hotel was also advised that our party included a non-meat eater. Imagine, therefore, our double surprise when the personalized, non-meat printed menu included a pigeon dish and that as a sixth dish in a five course menu. Secondly, a Campari Orange aperitive was served with a sub-two star Michelin standard bottled orange juice rather than the fresh stuff only to be outdone by a request for wine recommendations to accompany our dinner which was met with, 'there's red, white or rosé' and, when pressed for a specific recommendation, we were told, 'all are good!' As for the food itself, Michelin will have to judge: we can only say that the menu descriptions seemed sometimes to be at odds with the served dish (viz the absence of the announced black pudding with the venison) and that the whole lacked the creativity and technical finesse of similarly rated restaurants. Regrettably, the lack of staff professionalism that had been in evidence through much of our brief stay was continued at check out when we saw that the final bill had not included the previous night's dinner. Inexplicably, this took ten minutes to correct until, presumably, the receptionist had found someone responsible to authorise the additional charge. As a footnote, the hotel welcomes dogs. There is, however, no green area (or tree) adjacent to the hotel to exercise them quickly. (There are, though, signposted walking paths which start a little was away from the hotel). Also, the hotel is located between a main road (which local truckers seem to treat as a Formula 1 practice circuit despite the 30km speed limit), the Murg river (in spate and noisy when we visited) and a tram line. Apart from the main road, which we found life-threatening when trying to cross, the latter two features neither bothered us unduly nor prevented a good night's sleep. But, then gain, we snore! Not impressed with room and serviceHotel is quite large and disorganised. We checked in at one end but had to drag cases etc. through restaurant to reception at other end where keys were kept but we couldn't pay. Room was uninviting, claustrophobic with no outside space or decent view. Service poor

A Black Forest GemExcellent experience in all respects at the Hotel Sackmann. Room offered great comfort. The very competent staff pleasantly greeted and served us. They attended to our needs in expert fashion whenever we had a request. The hotel has three restaurants, plus an outside terrace and an aperitif bar. All the dining venues have their own unique character. The buffet breakfast has options to suit all tastes. The spa is open from 8 am to 8 pm and offers a luxurious opportunity to relax and energize. The swimming pool is very nice, and I definitely recommend the sauna. The hotel has biking and hiking trails nearby. Guests can rent bicycles and helmets. Also, the hotel provides a train pass for use throughout the area, which enables guests to travel to the Baiersbronn town center as well as to other towns around the Black Forest. The Black Forest has a lot of charm.

Go for dinner and stay for the spa.I would visit this hotel just for the spa, which is the nicest I have visited in the area. If not, just for the restaurant, which has two Michelin stars but deserves. The hotel has ample parking, a friendly staff and is located by a river, in a small village and near several walking and biking trails.
