Naked, thin, motionless: No A/C!Not even the lobby had A/C. We might have stumbled into a manifestation of a craze that started in Japan several years ago which shames businesses into setting A/C thermostats to around 82F - a temperature some Japanese researchers have declared as survivable only if one is "naked, skinny, and motionless." Except for "naked", that describes us. At this hotel, Japanese businessmen clad in black suits, arriving for check-in, had dropped all pretense of stoicism in the face of discomfort. Or, maybe there's a date on which all of Japan switches off all A/C. Similar to the fashion mandate to avoid wearing white after Labor Day. Even the Shinkansen Green Car, normally a comfortable haven in years past, was a baking oven. I wanted to strip naked on the train! We thought we'd suffer the train ride and relax later in our room. Well THAT didn't happen! The front desk said, "Oh, just open your window." Surprise! The 8th-floor window does open enough to let in a bit of fresh air or to allow a frustrated jump to the pavement below. The bed was prison-cot hard. My wife opted to sleep & sweat on the couch. Speaking of "front desk". . . we arrived earlier than the official 3PM check-in time and, this being Japan, we knew we'd be waiting until 3PM to see our room whether the hotel had been empty for weeks or not. Young lady looks at the clock, observes it's 1:55PM and politely comments we only have an hour to wait. Her surly gentleman co-worker barked, "One hour AND FIVE MINUTES!"

7 Night stayStayed for a week in October at this very standard Japanese hotel which is located very conveniently near to the main station, car hire companies and shops and restaurants. Rooms are small, but have everything needed and comfortable with good wifi. Breakfast is good (japanese). Good choice.

A Weeks StayStayed for eight nights in this business hotel in Nagaoka very close to the station. Very good free Wi-fi. Japanese breakfast. Well located for many restaurants and bars. Rooms are small but have everything you need. Beds are very hard and rice pillows. Bathroom is very small. Very little storage. Clean and good but hard bed.

5 Night StayA typical Route Inn which can be found all over Japan. Rooms are compact with little storage but have everything needed. Bathroom is especially small. Breakfast is very Japanese and not at all to western taste. No parking on site and good Wi-fi. Very central and near the main station.
