Well LocatedPicked this hotel because I was going to a concert at Grand Messe Kumamoto and because they have an artificial hot spring onsite. But I only manage to soak in there for once or twice. I was having difficulty in opening the door, as they locked the female bath for security. It was well located as it was just across the street from the JR Kumamoto station (not the shinkansen exit, but the other exit). The rate was reasonable as well.

Below Japanese parNot recommended at almost 8k yen per night with many other better hotels such as JR Kyushu Kumamoto close by. We checked in with a broken sofa, run down furniture, broken avian net at the balcony and badly scratched toilet bowl - I felt like waking into a hotel in the 80s. They still using room key with bulky key chain forcing you to hand over the key to the counter each time you go out the hotel. This hotel does not fit normal Japanese hotel standard. We told the front desk about the room condition and they are very apologetic and change another room for us but to our disappointment the other room is in the same dilapidated condition. The plus sides, however, were their slightly bigger size room compared to other modern Japanese hotels and the politeness of staff (other than one of the male staff who shown impatient attitude towards us when we complaint about the room). The hotel has a public bath on the 1st floor. I would encourage especially western visitors to try it and experience the Japanese way if bathing. The male and female bathing area are separated. You just wear the pajamas and slipper provided at the room ad walk down with your towels (big towel to dry yourself up after bathing and small one to put on your head and soaking in the hot spring pool). Place your slipper outside the bath area and place your pajamas and big towel in the locker. You walk in naked only with the small towel. Shower yourself clean before dipping into the spring pool. The temperature is set to 40-42C and usually don't dip more than 10mins. Wet the small towel and put on your head to keep your head hydrated. The hotel has no front entrance from the street, instead it is hidden behind a car rental shop. The hotel name of Ekimae literally means "at the front of the station" but it actually located 7 - 10min walk to the northeast of Kumamoto railway station, so don't be fooled especially if you have a few big luggage.

Good breakfast and clean roomsBooked this hotel for 2 twin beds at a bigger price than other hotels nearer to the train stations. But I have not regretted it. Room was spacious with a table and 2 side chairs and big enough for laying out our luggage. Breakfast was a good spread for me, ranging from traditional Japanese food to western sausages and bread, soup, salad, yoghurt etc. Breakfast is something that I look forward to every morning. Hotels come with a public bath which I didn't try it but it comes with a resting place and vending machine for you to purchase a drink after your bath. The air con in my room is rather noisy in the night, however it's negilible as long as it serves its function. All in all, I enjoyed my stay there.

Nice and clean placeI stayed there for two nights and enjoyed there. Kumamoto didn't have so many things to see so we took the opportunity rest in the room. It was clean, but bathroom had some signs of wear. Breakfast was next to rivee

RecommendableHotel route inn in most cases have a public bath in it so does this hotel. Of course you have your own in your room but it would better to use the public one which is very relaxing. The location is very good i.e. very close to Kumamoto Station and from there you can take a tram to go anywhere like Kumamoto Castle etc. Only one bad thing is that there are not so many fancy restaurants available nearby(I mean near Kumamoto Station) but it means that you have limited choice of types of food there. The room waswide enough and clean.
