    Agradable estadia

Should be classified as 1 1/2 star b&b

This is not even a two star hotel. How can they call themselves a four star? We spent a terrible night here and quickly paid and checked out. The first room we were shown - the luxury room - was on the second floor, NO LIFT. It had a bathtub in the middle of the room as one enters. Go up 4 steps or so and theres a ridiculous red room, or go the other way to the wc. Really? Go up and down those steps in the middle of the night? We settled for a room on the first floor by the front desk but, who cares, the hotel staff left at 9:00pm. The bed was a sort of uncomfortable futon that lied on a low platform. No air conditioner so we had to open the windows, but the hotel is in a rather heavily used road and we heard every car and truck all night. This hotel is away from the city and would have taken me valuable time and effort to visit sites. Pillows and linens smelled of smoke, and the towels were old and thin and stunk of smoke. The breakfast might have been good but I dont stay in a hotel for its breakfast, I stay to sleep and relax and for its location. After spending a night uncomfortable and unable to sleep, who care for breakfast?? We found a much nicer hotel for the same price and moved on after some resistance from the management. The question remains: What is TripAdvisor doing to stop hotels from misrepresenting themselves?? How come hotels like this show good reviews?? Im puzzled.

    A rose without the thorns

The impression you take away from a stay in this charming boutique hotel might well depend upon the season you stay and the room/s you occupy. We had a delightful experience and will surely return but there are a few shortcomings which deprived it of excellence and the four-star claim falls short of international standards. The good: reception was proficient, helpful and engaging as were all of the other staff we came in contact with during our stay. Our Roseroom suite (#3) was spacious (40m2), conspicuously clean, quiet, tastefully fitted out and comfortably furnished. Everything expected was there and it all worked as expected. The king bed was comfortable, the linens clean and crisp and there were enough pillows for each of us to find a favourite. The walk-thru bathroom arrangements seemed, at first, to be a little strange but proved to be very functional and the fish-bowl shower stall was as large as a London hotel bathroom. The living area opens to a large private furnished sun deck and on-site parking was included in the tariff. The included Wifi worked well on all our devices. The breakfast is a premium quality and very well serviced buffet with eggs to order. The not so good: our mid-September stay was unaffected by the lack of air-conditioning but that may be a different story during the warmer months. The hotel is some way removed from the happening centre of town, but a 15-minute brisk walk will get you there or 5 minutes in the #7 bus which stops very close by. The building is an old private villa that has been extensively and tastefully renovated but there are a few navigational quirks one of which is an array of oddly placed steps of between the entry hall/bathroom and living/sleeping areas in our suite. Hot water took an eternity to arrive at the wash basins and only slightly less so in the much faster running shower so the water heater must be some distance from the suite.

    DISAPPOINTING

We recently spent a week at the Hotel Rosenvilla, and while the establishment had a number of positives, it failed to meet our expectations. In general terms, the hotels website descriptions we found to be substantially over-written: we expected central location modern, stylished (sic) rooms only 15 minutes walk from the historic centre of Salzburg romantic rooms with stylish furniture and modern comfort a residential gem. Our room a Double Room Classic was extremely basic and visibly tired: bare wooden floors, no air con, no tea/coffee machine, no mini fridge (admittedly, these two British staples are rare in Austria), no iron, no bottled water, few wall decorations, small shower, thin towels and subject on occasion to road noise. The hotel lacked a lift though, fortunately, our room was on the first floor, necessitating a relatively short haul of the luggage. There was no public area to which to escape other than the breakfast room and some terrace seating. Overall, without knowing the precise criteria, the four-star rating did not seem to be merited. In terms of walking distance, 15 minutes from the hotel to the centre is a gross understatement. We are both brisk walkers and it took us 25 minutes to reach the edge of the Altstadt (Old Town), while getting to the Baerenwirt restaurant for dinner one evening required an hour. (There is, however, an excellent bus connection to the centre which does take around 10 minutes.) On the positive side, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly, there was a free tea/coffee service (including to the room) plus a coffee making machine in Reception and free wi-fi. The breakfast room was modern and tastefully furnished and there was a wide selection of continental-style fare, plus scrambled eggs on request. We paid a little over 900 euros for the double room for the week (breakfast, if chosen, was a further 14 euros per person), which we felt to be steep for what was offered and represented very poor value. For direct bookers the website promises a free upgrade if available, but when we inquired, Reception seemed to be unaware of this; in any case, the hotel was full for the duration. Overall we were disappointed with our stay and feel unable to recommend the hotel. In a popular city destination such as Salzburg, this type of establishment is caught between up-market hotels which can often be sourced for not a lot more.

    Good value for price

Picturesque homey hotel. Good breakfast. Clean rooms. Friendly staff. However not walkable to old town. Must take 13 euro cab ride each way. Plus hotel surroundings up the hill are modern apartments so what I thought was a quaint setting was disappointing. Next trip I will look for a hotel downtown.
