    Secret Sanctuary

This hotel just keeps on getting better. If you want to escape the pressure and heat of Rio, if you are looking for complete tranquility and a place that takes your breath away, this is your place. The food is all organic and five star. I treat this place as my perfect sanctuary in the world.

No drop in standards despite the recession

Im writing another review of hotel Rosa dos Ventos mainly to counter the negative rubbish posted by someone else. We have now stayed here several times and everything about this hotel is what you would expect and the location is breathtaking. Yes, the rooms to need some minor cosmetic attention but get real because in the midst of the worst recession ever and with hotels closing all over the country, this is not going to happen yet. :) My main gripe though is with the person who posted about the menu only having two options. Ive included a couple of menu scans and these show the format as it has always been and always will be. In short, the food is exemplary. The fruit and veg used in the hotel is organically grown on their own farm and the bread, cakes, jams yogurt etc, are all home made. And yes to the other poster, a couple of the locks on the sliding glass windows in the hotel restaurant are broken. WOW!, you must have a truly sad life to turn this into a complaint but top marks for managing to find something! I can only assume these people must have been paid to post negative comments by a rival hotel.

    Presumptiously decadent. Overpriced.

The internet is spotty in an area where there is barely cellphone service. The Hotel is in beautiful surroundings, very well kept. The property is nicely set up. But, for the assumed "personality", it could offer some basic details, like hot water in all faucets, better blackouts for overhead windows, heating in the room, at least in fall and winter, decent pillows and better quality sheets. Towels were of poor quality and when I complained that we had been given floor mats in lieu of hand towels, I was given additional floor mats. It is supposedly a five-star hotel!!! Service is too solicitous and very slow, bordering the unpleasant. Almost subservient. We had dinner. There is a fixed price menu with three choices of entrees. My companion had medallions in a sesame crust. I ordered it over medium, and it arrived well done and dry. I ordered the confit de canard. It came overcooked, drenched in some brown sauce, over roasted, dry on the bone and tough.

Stunning location, good food, attentive service

This is one of the most beautiful hotel properties I've ever seen, with stunning views, well-maintained grounds and pool, and lovely nature walks. The common spaces have a cozy cottage feel, with comfy chairs and fireplaces. Our room was simple, clean, and comfortable -- no frills, but no complaints. The best part of the room was the veranda overlooking the mountains with trellised plants creating privacy and separation from others -- lovely! The king sized bed was firm but comfortable. Clean, crisp, nice bedding. Soft, comfy pillows. Many reviewers talk about how excellent the food is. We found it to be quite good, but not great exactly. We loved the salads and the pate, and the desserts were delicious. While both the lunch and dinner entrees were good, they didn't quite warrant the considerable cost. The pasta was fine but simple; the vegetables tended to be a bit mushy and overcooked for my taste; and the meat dishes were good but not exceptional. And drinks were MUCH too expensive, in my opinion -- a glass of wine was R$50, a caipirinha R$45, etc. The least expensive bottle of wine available was R$140. For guests with unlimited spending power, this is no problem, but this place was a big splurge for me and my partner, so these prices seemed too high to us. The service was excellent -- very attentive and warm. It was clear that every staff member was very eager to please. I highly recommend making it up to the mirante, which is a long walk that can be shortened by a bumpy and somewhat treacherous drive. We found the drive a tiny bit stressful but doable. We drove a Honda Fit, and scraped the bottom a couple times. There are also a few spots on the dirt road in which one would easily get stuck if the road is even slightly wet, so I wouldn't recommend the drive during or after a rain. There is an especially steep spot right at the top with two stone tracks going straight up -- we chose not to drive it and instead walked up this last part, which was a short, easy 5 minute walk.

A perfect escape from the city

We have stayed here 3 times now and we simply love it. This time we brought friends. The food is so fresh and delicious always and the staff and the owner are super nice and accommodating. The last time we were there they built us a camp fire and we enjoyed roasting marshmallows with our friends who came with us. (Have to bring your own marshmallows) Spectacular views, pool, tennis, kayaking, hiking, jacuzzi, massage, sauna, horseback riding... its a real pleasure to stay here and relax and get back to simple things and spend quality time with your kids. A true break from city life. I wish they had a few more kayaks to use though!
