    Would Not recomend this hotel

I would not recommend this hotel. It is NOT user friendly foe people with walking difficulties there are too many stairs to climb. The staff are rude and the food is terrible. I stayed there for 3 nights and when I complained about the quality of the food I was insulted by the manager

Full of Cretan Charm, a fabulous relaxing holiday

Our first trip to Crete & at the very beginning of the tourist season for 2019. My son and I were looking for a relaxing break, warmer weather & to experience some lovely Cretan hospitality. We were not disappointed and have just enjoyed a wonderful week at this hotel and will definitely return again. On arrival After a pleasant transfer from the airport we were greeted at reception by lovely staff who immediately made us feel genuinely, very welcome & who processed us quickly and efficiently. The hotel reception overlooks the tennis court and with sea views out to the mountains. It is very airy, with large windows to enjoy the view as well as being very clean and with lots of space and comfortable seating nicely arranged throughout. There was also a nice bar with roof terrace which looked very inviting and which also offered sea/mountain views and which we would later find was the perfect place to have a drink at the end of the day and watch the sunset. Our room We were shown to our room which was a short walk from reception. It was a lovely clean, large room with a balcony overlooking the sea and which we later found was very well located for all amenities (rm 734) on the first floor. We were directly opposite the main hotel block where the reception, disco and bars are located along with the main restaurant and within easy access to all areas of the hotel including the tennis court, pools, the spa, the shop and the beach. There were robes on arrival in the room with clean towels and a welcome bowl of fruit, as well as a voucher for a complimentary massage (15 mins). Toiletries had been provided in the bathroom and bottled water in the fridge. There was also a TV, Hairdryer, kettle for Tea/coffee as well as some complimentary tea/coffee. There is a safe in the room if required and ample storage space, good sized mirrors as well as a nice sized balcony offering a sea view. Wi-fi is also available throughout the hotel. The room comes with heating/air conditioning controlled by remote control. It is worth noting the hotel complex is built into the hill so it is tiered (like a wedding cake) as it has developed over the years. It has a lovely village feel with well appointed gardens and lovely views. There are stairs as well as lifts and accessible ramps ensuring all parts of the hotel are easily accessible. We also noticed well positioned benches in the garden areas and at nice view points on levels 2 & 3 in the main hotel block which are perfect for those needing a rest, or just wanting to take in the views at various points around the hotel. Beach Bar Follow the signs out of the hotel and walk behind the tennis court to access a small subway that leads you safely to the beach (5 mins) and you will find Marias beach bar. A lovely space with seating & tables and well appointed sun loungers directly on and over the beach. Maria is lovely, the perfect host and she has a very well run bar. We were able to enjoy it out of season, it has great views out to the mountains and the sea and it is fantastic & relaxing spot to watch the sun set from with a lovely refreshing drink. Entertainment & Amenities Oska, leads the animations team and he made himself known to us as we explored on arrival. We found him to be perfect for this role, welcoming and interested to know what we would like as well as informative. He was also really inclusive of everybody (we were the only English guests for the first part of the week) and language was no barrier to everybody participating and having fun. Oska was noticeably always available day and night to ensure everybody was having a good time, he has a very good way of bringing everyone together for daily activities as well as quick fun games. We enjoyed playing poolside Ping pong/darts & other fun games. The animations team also offered, stretching yoga, volleyball and bowls as well as a lot more over the course of the week during the day and childrens activities. Federica who worked with Oska was a hit with my son for her football skills and I would say a hit with all of the guests too. We found Federica to be friendly, funny and engaging and a good team with Oska. Always around and always with a smile for everyone a lovely lady too. I also noted the hard work and efforts of Audrey who was responsible for the French travellers but who was polite and kind to us and inclusive whenever appropriate. Notably and to the credit of the team and the parents but the children are so well entertained here they are enjoying being children and not looking at screens at all! Evening Entertainment Evening entertainment changed daily and over the course of the week we were treated to discos, karaoke, Cretan dancing & band, bingo and a Saxaphone Player, The evening programme takes place in the hotel bar / lobby after dinner or in the disco on the lower ground floor and is suitable for people of all all ages. The evening entertainment is hosted by the animations team and again Oska, Federica and Audrey being the good constants and for putting on enjoyable nights that appeal to everybody. We booked the tennis court at reception for a daily match after breakfast. Racquets and balls are supplied (3 euro charge per lost ball) if you dont have your own and we didnt loose any over the course of the week. The hotel team also converted the tennis court into a football pitch when asked and when it was not booked which was great to see them accommodating ad hoc requests from the guests. There was also a basketball hoop in the tennis court as well. The bar and terrace are central to the evenings entertainment. Here you can enjoy lovely cocktails or soft drinks and watch the sun set. The bar staff are very good, good natured and sharing a good sense of humour with us too. They work very hard and ensure that the bar area and tables are always clean as well as serving guests quickly and efficiently and make good recommendations too. Pool Areas There is an adult only pool located behind the tennis court which is accessible via a gate or via the Royal Mare hotel entrance. It is a private area and spa treatments can be booked to be enjoyed there. The main pool area is located on the 3rd floor if taking the lift. Here you will be able to access a lovely, large terrace overlooking the sea and which has plenty of sun beds and shades and which benefits from the sun all day. There is a large pool with attached paddling pool on this level and which inflatables are allowed to be used. Here you will also find Jasmines Bar where you can get drinks / refreshments from 10.00 - 17:30 every day. The bar is clean and brilliantly run by a lovely Norwegian lady who speaks about 10 different languages and who offers a fantastic and personal service to all while keeping the bar super clean and inviting. Loved the daily frozen cocktails (both alcoholic and non alcoholic options available) as well as teas / coffees and a wide range of bar and soft drinks. Snacks including filled rolls, pizza slices and cakes and doughnuts are also available here throughout the day. The spa is also located in the middle of the terrace and divides the main pool area from the childrens club and play area as well as the childrens pools and slides. Kids pool & slides 2 pools here overlooking the sea in a safe and secure part of the hotel. The childrens club and playground is the entry point to the childrens pool area which again is super clean with lots of sunbeds and a grassy area for volleyball and some of the activities. There is a lovely childrens paddling pool here with slides for toddlers as well as the main slide pool which is manned by two lifeguards. One at the top of the slides and one at the bottom. Fice big slides are available here. A curly slide, a rapid blue slide and three bumpy slides. Children and adults all enjoyed these safely under the watchful eyes of the life guards who do have first aid kits for small grazes etc and are really on the ball when it comes to observing the children and preventing risks. The slides are on and supervised from 11-6pm, plenty of time for the children and adults to enjoy. My son also liked the sandy playground where he could play with other children on the climbing frame or shoot basketball and where the football loving boys would gather to get into teams for impromptu football games too. Spa I visited the spa a couple of times during our stay. The staff were lovely, very welcoming and professional and made time to talk through my requirements as well as the range of treatments offered to ensure my treatments were tailor made to my needs. There is a terrace directly outside overlooking the main pool and Jasmines Bar and which gets the sun for the most of the day. The childrens slides and pools and activities are located behind the spa and treatments can also be enjoyed in the adults only area of the the hotel too. I had a 55 min anti stress massage which I booked shortly after arrival and which I would highly recommend. It was a lovely start to my holiday and I was so relaxed knowing my son was being well entertained at the same time, leaving me able to totally relax and the intensity of the massage suited me perfectly. I booked for the end of our stay a after the sun facial and face massage which left my skin feeling super clean and fresh looking. It was a very relaxing facial and on both occasions I visited the spa I had the most peaceful and deep sleep after too. The spa also do a range of offers which change daily and which you should look out for. These are usually advertised in the spa and also outside the main restaurant. Food & Drink Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the restaurant on the lower level of the main block of the hotel. The restaurant is clean and bright and a nice size and the staff here so friendly, they made us feel like family. NIkos, Kostas and Michaelmas our firm favourites because of the warmth they extended to us and for working so tirelessly to ensure the restaurant runs efficiently and that every guest is well catered for. You are seared on arrival subject to the size of your party and most days we enjoyed tables with views. My son and I enjoyed every meal he barely touched the childrens choices which seemed like a good range to suit most children a mix of pasta/pizza and nuggets types of dishes. A good continental and cooked breakfast was offered daily along with fresh fruits and Cretan variations. Pancakes and omelettes and eggs made to order on the terrace and a very popular choice with the guests. The lunch and dinner menus changed daily with always with a fresh table of delicious Cretan food and a well stocked & fresh salad bar and a daily soup option. We enjoyed the Cretan dishes particularly, everything from Greek salad to Dakota and gamopilafo, moussaka and souvlaki as well as fish. Dolmades, olives, tzatziki and Greek yogurt, honey and nuts were delicious. My son was open to trying all dishes because it all looked very appetising and was clean and well presented. He was also encouraged to try new foods by the friendly staff who also put in BBQ nights while we were there too. Fresh fruit was plentiful and always available as well as an array of Greek Cheeses and local deserts as well as ice cream for the children. Tea/coffee/water and soft drinks are self serve. Also wine is self serve with red/white and rose options available. Shop & ATM There is an on-site shop located just beneath the pool terrace and where you can buy everything from cold drinks to cigarettes, headache tablets and sun creams as well as souvenirs and a range of olive oil products and alcohol. It is a well stocked shop, very friendly and also sells pool inflatables and ice creams, postcards and I am sure caters well for most travellers needs. Next door to this is a lovely jewellery shop offering a range of traditional and modern jewellery in gold and silver and with discounted prices for hotel guests. There is also an ATM located outside the hotel. Overall If you are looking for a relaxed, laid back and friendly holiday in Crete this hotel has all of the charm and facilities to cater for you. Nothing is too much trouble. It offers a range of good facilities without being too big and it feels safe and secure. It is very cleverly laid out to make the most of the grounds from the beach all the way up to the pool terrace. We loved the people, the food and location and made good use of all of the facilities. We left there feeling relaxed after a lovely week and keen to return. The staff were working tirelessly not just to ensure the guests have the best experience but also very quietly on maintaining the hotel, gardening and carrying out pre season maintenance, as well as completing a number of new rooms with their own private splash pools and more access to some of the accommodation blocks. None of this felt intrusive on our holiday nor did it prevent us from enjoying everything the hotel had to offer. If anything it was lovely to see how loved the hotel is and how hard they work to ensure they continue to develop the hotel to create wonderful Cretan holiday experiences. Thank you so much for a fab week.

    Best sea view

Stayed here for a week. Liked the hotel very much. We were given a room with the great sea view with huge balcony with a table and two chairs. The room (732) was clean, had all the equipment and furniture for the best rest, WiFi was available in the room though sometimes with weak signal, restaurant meal was also diverse, has outdoor and indoor with sea view. The hotel staff is multilingual and friendly, ready to help and assist in any issue. The hotel has its beach, you have to take a short walk there, but this is good especially on case of all inclusive package. The umbrellas and deck chairs are free for the hotel guests. Beach is sandy though there are some pebbles at entrance to the sea Special respect to the best animation team, who made all our stay full of fun, entertainment and unforgettable fire show. --
