Decent place run by a curmudgeonPlace was ok but the lady running obviously does like either foreigners or cyclists.

SEEN BETTER DAYS BUT STILL WITH QUAINT CHARMThe town centre of Schirmeck seems to be completely devoid of accommodation which was why we finished up 3 km out of town in the southern suburb of La Claquette. The hotel is a large old-fashioned building that has clearly seen better days and has a slightly run-down feeling but is clean and neat. Our room was of medium size, comfortable and with a nice view over the River Bruche, gardens and forest. The elderly receptionist misled us on the availability of nearby places for dinner but we eventually tracked down some basic choices in Rothau, a ten minute walk, over the railway line. Breakfast was a little limited but the breads were fresh ad good. This stay was at the end of Day 11 of our 25 day trek through Les Vosges. Previous night: Hotel Velleda at Col du Donon Tomorrow: Hotel Marchal in Le Hohwald

A Waste of a Lovely PropertyFirst of all, this hotel was not in Schirmeck but 3 kms away in La Claquette - not useful when we had travelled by train to start the GR5 and could have got off at Wathau which was nearer. The building is delightful but it is in dire need of a makeover. The owner skulked in the background whilst her daughter/grandaughter showed us our rooms. We were told not to use the lounge as the dog used it! We asked whether we could have an earlier breakfast than 8.30 as we had a 22km walk the next day and also wanted to visit Struthof - this was refused. Dinner was not available but we had a drink in the conservatory before we left to find a restaurant but were told that the hotel closed at 9pm so we could not leave the remains of our bottle of wine to drink later. Our room was large but the bathroom was ill-equipped with the shower gel not filled; we were a group of 6 people and none of the rooms had shower gel. We were conscious all night of scuttling noises above our heads and, although I cannot confirm this, having lived in a barn in the countryside for a number of years I think it was rats! We left at 8 am and saw no-one.

A hidden gem!We needed a 3 night stay for a wedding in La Broque and found this on the internet. What a find! Wonderful hospitality, delicious breakfasts and lovely grounds complete with a river, llamas and chickens. Our room had a great view and was very clean and extremely comfortable.

Simple, but nice hotelWe stayed at the Rubanerie while hiking along the GR53. The hotel is in a good location, since there are not many alternatives in the area. We had a nice clean room with a balcony overlooking the spacious and well-kept garden are. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but there are several within walking distance.
