What a waste of a great site!

We opted for this hotel, as it looked exactly like what we wanted - great layout, parking, wifi, great looking pool, quite location etc, etc. Everything looked the part, and on check-in came our first big disappointment - the pool was still being built! We decided that we wouldn't let that impact on such beautiful surroundings, especially since weather was still quite fresh! Second disappointment was the lack of soundproofing in the otherwise well appointed rooms - we could even hear the mobile phone of the people next door buzzing at 5:00 am - never mind everything else that these neighbours said or did. Off to breakfast we went, and found a beautiful spread - fruit, juices, different cold cuts, teas/coffees - and we decided that on the strength of such a display, all else would be forgotten. And yet, we were proved wrong yet again - the following day we seemed to be the only people in the hotel, apart from some commercial travellers who had left much earlier, and everything on display at breakfast was evidently leftovers from the previous day. The situation got worse - we were served the same stuff over and over again. 6 hard-boiled eggs were so evidently the same and to prove the point we actually marked them. They were there the following day and we took up the matter with the staff. The girl explained that the night porter set up the breakfast and it was evidently too much of a bother! There was no sign of management at all times and when we asked were told that they were on leave. We then decide to curtail our visit and asked for cancellation of the rest of the booking., which was agreed to. At no stage did anyone try to apologise for the shortcomings to us. It is evident that this hotel is run as an after thought as the owners seem to have a lucrative business over weekends catering for weddings, baptisms, confirmations etc. In fact over the Saturday and Sunday that we were there, the amount of people in the adjacent catering complex was quite substantial. This begs the question - why bother to invest a large amount of money in what could be an excellent resort and then ignore it totally? What a waste and what a pity.

    relaxing getaway place

We stayed here for a friend's wedding. The wedding itself was quite a good experience although some things were not excellent from that point if view (desserts etc badly organised, given only cooked ham and mozzarella as a substitute for raw seafood dish as 7 months pregnant things like that). The rooms are comfortable and clean if nothing special. Good bathroom facilities although no soap in the dispenser which was annoying. Staff generally very polite and helpful other than one bar girl who was rather surly and unhelpful. Pool is excellent. Very big and just beautiful. A really relaxing place with helpful ans friendly lifeguards. Breakfast was rather basic but quite nice if you like the continental style. Lunchtime sandwiches however were pretty rubbish and certainly not worth the 9 euros we paid. Honestly we'd have gone to MacDonald 's if we'd known! Whoever in general it was a pleasant stay and wouldn't be too much of a hardship to go back if need be.

Not to our expectations, except for the swimming pool and the restaurant

We stayed around a week including Ferragosto 2015. We booked a family room. We cannot recommed this hotel to anyone. This is what we liked: We loved the swimming pool. It was accesible to the public in general but the best place was reserved for the hotel guests. It was not crowded, not even in Ferragosto. It was perfect for our kids. If you practice aquagym, there is a daily class. We liked the restaurant even more. There is a 3 course menu for 25 which is clearly worth the price. Service is efficient and proffesional. My family would have preferred a quicker service but it was quite ok for me. The staff helped us keeping some baby stuff refrigerated to avoid the problems with our minibar. And this is what we did not like: Air conditioning did not work most of the time. It was difficult for me to sleep. We complained at the reception and the answer was the problem had been caused by a thunder storm the days before. Even when the air conditioning worked eventually, it was only capable of dropping the temperature down some 5 degrees or so. Having 36 °C outside -100 °F-, this is a problem. WiFi. There was no wifi connection for a couple of days. When there was, the transfer speed was 0,30 Mbps Max. Absolutely insufficient unless you only use it for whatsapp only. Some days, no hot water early morning for our shower. There was after breakfast. It was only warm at that time. Fireworks at 01.00 a.m. Nice if you have insomnia or like nightlife. Otherwise they will wake you up because the rooms are only partially soundproof. And at least when we were there we had to suffer from 3 wedding celebrations just next to us. Loud music until midnight, DJ and fireworks at 1 am -not all of them, fortunatelly-. Fridge. In our reservation a "minibar" and a "fridge" was mentioned. There was only a minibar in our room and I even had to move it to another plug myself because it was not working when we arrived. The minibar was roughly ok for a coke -unless you are American!- but clearly not ok if you needed to keep a yogurt for a baby regrigerated for example. There was an empty space for another minibar or fridge but if it was no longer there. Very limited space. The family room we booked was not really suitable for a baby cot. I attach a photo. Poor maintenance. A shelf was broken in the closet and several plugs did not have power. The sat TV did not work for 2 days. We also had a couple of blackouts lasting some minutes. No bathrobes altough included according to our reservation. Same thing with DVD/CD player. There was breakfast only until 9.30, we were told. We complained constantly about all these issues at the reception but they were able to do little. Eventually we demanded a discount in the bill to compensate for the contracted services we did not receive and we got one of around 3.5%. It was something; far from fair, though.

    Relax in the country side

Well organized hotel with an excellent restaurant (prices are incredible for what you get). It is ideal for nature lovers and families with children. Not far from Alberobello, one of Italy's most particular places and UNESCO site. It is also close to Castellana Grotte, amazing caves million of years old with unique views.

beautiful buildings with a cold atmosphere

This is not a hotel I cannot recommend to anyone. The buildings and surroundings are beautiful but that`s about it. It might work for Italians though, I dont know. The first day we arrived we were met with a receptionist that was in a bad mood and did not give us any information about the hotels rules. I asked and asked about stuff and her mood became worse. Fortunately, I also asked about dinner and she asked me if I would reserve a table for the evening (seems like we would not have had dinner at all if I had not reserved the table) puh...lucky me :-) One could not bring coffee and food down to the pool or room or our terrace and you could only sit in a small restricted area near the reception if you wanted to have a coffee, soda or lunch. What`s the point with a great swimming-pool and a nice terrace outside your room and wonderful gardens when you cannot enjoy it? Seems kind of meaningless to me. The lunch was not very interesting either and the payment-system was confusing. You order your food in the bar and then go back and stand in a long line by the reception to pay..(?) -Then we wanted to try the swimming pool. The first shock was that you need a bathing cap to be able to swim. Of course you buy it on the hotel in the reception for a high price. This should be written on the hotels homepage and on Hotels.com to warn the guests. I would never have ordered this hotel if I knew about this rule. My son had been looking very much forward to swim in the pool but when he heard about this, he did`nt want to swim there. I have stayed in many hotels around the world but never heard of anything like it. We were not warned about it in the reception either and I first went into the pool without knowing and one of the guards came running towards me and were quite rude when telling me about their strange custom. The next day I wanted to give the pool-area another try. Not for swimming, just for relaxation....after 10 minutes a new stressed-out swimming pool-guard came running towards me and told me that I had to move to another bed further away from the pool (?) It took a while to understand this, because they hardly speak English. Finally, I was told by another staff member that if you wanted a bed close to the pool you had to reserve it the day before.... Rules are great, but one has to inform the guests once they arrive to avoid all the confusion. If English is bad, then make a brochure for international guests! There were also beautiful gardens and gates on the area but they were all locked up. Another great potential that is wasted. In general there is a lot of great potential that is wasted at this hotel. What WAS great at this place was the restaurant. The employees were very professional and food was fantastic. They were observant and ready to serve you at any moment. The atmosphere were quite different there compared to the hotel and it seemed also like a quite independent building that was a couple of hundred meters walking from the hotel. I was glad that we had at least one positive experience here before we left. The reason I bother to write all this is because this place could have been a wonderful experience if just run in a better way and with another intention. My advice: -Exchange the staff with people that love to work in a service-profession (there was one terrific guy working there, but again he did not give any information about hotels customs) -Unlock the gates, and open up the beautiful gardens for the guests! -Remove the strange rules and let the guests enjoy the pool-area and terraces in its fullest! -Make a brochure in English as well about hotels customs and start up room-service! Good luck to you Antica Masseria :-)
