An Uninspiring StayWe had booked a standard twin room including breakfast for 3 nights over the internet (330 for 3 nights). Having arrived by train, in the afternoon, it was an easy walk, slightly uphill to Pietari Kylliäinen taking about 10 minutes. Its a sort walk to the castle, museum and water as well. Check in was not particularly friendly or gracious, but we survived. Check out was similar. The hotel is best described as functional and is oldish and unrenovated, which sometimes is not a bad thing. There is an elevator serving all floors. There was an industrial, oily smell in the area around the elevator. We were allocated room 401. Our room was a good size with windows overlooking the carpark. The window was openable. There is a fridge in the room together with couch, desk and tv. The design of the room was not functional. For instance, the couch faced a blank wall. The double bed was pushed into a corner, about 300mm from the wall on the side of the bed and along the side wall, were 2 lights (with their cords dangling down) which would normally be at the bed head. It was clean. Wifi is fast and free. The bed was comfortable. The ensuite had underfloor heating and a drying rack. The shower was small and the hand basin was difficult to use as the glass shelf above it jutted too far over the basin. Noise insulation does not work as we could easily hear other guests. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant on our first evening, and it was satisfactory. Again not much grace from the waitress. The cost appeared to be the going rate for Savonlinna. Not great quality food and we did not go back. The first morning we needed the shower gel to be replenished and the last day, our room was not tidied even though new foot mat had been put out. These did no duly affect us, except to provide indicators. Breakfast was basic, and pretty average quality. Cordial-like juice, yogurt, fruit, cereal cheese, ham, tomato, breads and the usual unpalatable scrambled eggs, sausages or meatballs in the bain marie. Tea and coffee. There is enough there to provide a breakfast. Presumably this hotel is comparable to others in Savonlinna. If so, Savonlinna has a problem. This hotel is basic, and expensive for what we got, particularly as when we visited in early October, their season seemed to be over

Food ok, rooms out of date"Family room" for four during a June weekend. The building looks more like a 1960s apartment building than a purpose-built hotel. Family room claustrophobic (16-18 m2) and clearly out of date. Air cooling (not real a/c) added quite recently, a welcome addition indeed. Otherwise furnishings past their sell-by date, incl. ancient tv. A cheap facelift not so long ago by a half-wall paintjob, probably in connection with a window replacement operation. 120e for a night was a bit too steep for this. Lots of noise from the street as well. Food & breakfast good, but the restaurant not very functional when there are more guests around. The food saved the stay--pizza probably better than at the pizza joint down the road. The kitchen took its time (30 min from ordering, with about ten customers altogether) and we were surprised at not being offered the pizza menu at first, had to ask for it. Location excellent for the castle. Easy parking.

Basic, ok for short stayStayed for one night. The hotel is located a short walk from the railway station, Olavinlinna and all other major attractions. My room was facing the parking lot at the back and was fairly quiet. The room was fairly small and basic, however very clean. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was also small with hardly any shelf space; everything was in working order. Room amenities include TV, hair dryer and refrigerator. There is no safe. No toiletries are provided other than shower gel. Wifi is included. Breakfast was mediocre: limited selection, items not labeled, watered down coffee, bread, yogurt, cheese, some vegetables, unpalatable warm dishes catering to the local taste; no fresh fruit other than watermelon, pastries or cereal.

Rooms more for students than couples - at this price, try elsewhere firstWe were in town for the opera and were looking forward to the hotel which had good reviews. We found it more akin to a student lodging with a good breakfast. The room had two separate single beds on opposite sides of the room. Neither bed had light or table! Nowhere to put luggage... tiny bathroom and it was pretty expensive for all this. No way to open window and "air conditioning" had a modest air flow and hard to adjust. We asked about laundry which seemed to be a big deal - several phone calls needed but turned out to be an external service which was fast, good and for Finland, cheap! The breakfast was quite acceptable in kept refreshed as people consumed. We did not try dinner as there were better places close by - menu looked dull - but people were eating there after the opera. On the plus side: It is pretty close to the castle so easy to get there in the rain; parking around the back is handy and the staff are most friendly.
