This hotel should be a "last resort" in Vitória - ES

Admittedly, we waited until the last minute to decide on travel plans for Carnaval -2015, so when we started to check for hotels in Vitoria - ES we were not surprised to find most of the hotels sold out for the week. Fortunately, Hotel Paradise still had rooms and their prices were reasonable, considering the dates. Normally in a situation like this one, the last hotels to fill up are the worst options and there were only two hotels with rooms when we started looking. We picked the "least worst" of the two based on photos and reviews... When we arrived (late check-in at 8pm), the entrance was poorly identified, parking area poorly lit and the reception area looked like it hadn't been updated since the hotel was built sometime in the early 70's probably. The front desk clerk was not very hospitable and stated right up front that the first night's stay must be paid in advance. (I am certain that this policy is to reduce the high number of guests that would jump ship after checking in and seeing their room). The room, (ground floor, right off the lobby), was dingy, lit like one of those junkie motels in the movies, had cobwebs dangling in the corners and styrofoam in window, instead of glass. The door had obviously been forced at some time, because it was shredded around the door handle, as well as the door frame. And although we reserved a room for three, (me, my wife and our 11 year old daughter), the room had three "single" beds on rickety wooden frames that threatened to collapse beneath us. I don't normally feel insecure in hotels, but being on the ground floor with no glass in the window of a room that had OBVIOUSLY been broken into at some point was enough to do it for me. So we requested a room change and, after being told that the hotel had no rooms with double or queen beds, we were moved to a room on the 5th floor with two single beds and provided an extra mattress for our daughter to place on the floor as a make-shift third bed. Ahhhh... the joys of staying in a 1-star hotel! Anyway, we did little more than sleep at the hotel and spent our time out enjoying Vitório and the surrounding area, (which is lovely, by the way). The hotel has a pool, which is nearly as depressing as the rooms and serves breakfast to guests, which was meager even by brazilian "pousada" standards. The coffee was so terrible that even with cream and sugar, we left if on the table and the food consisted of hot dog weenies and scrambled eggs with a couple of options for fruit laid out with no fanfare what so ever. We've stayed at a LOT of different hotels and pousadas in Brazil and most of the pousadas are simple and cozy without a lot of luxury comforts. That's one of the things we enjoy about traveling in Brazil, but this hotel left us without any of the personable touches of a pousada and without the quality accommodations of a HOTEL to compensate. We would not recommend this hotel unless you absolutely need to stay in Vitoria and there are no other options within 50 miles...
