A Four Star Property? Maybe back in the 70sI stayed at Hotel Ostrov while my son attended a local Hockey camp. I don't think much at the property has been upgraded since the hotel was built, and the entire facility shows this in spades. You walk into a lobby with dark carpeting and tan floral sofas, that if they were covered in plastic, would fit perfectly into your grandmother's house in Milwaukee, circa 1972. Checkin was a breeze, parking was ample. We were assigned a room on the second floor (no elevator) so lugged the luggage/equipment up the stairs. Upstairs corridor was very dark with these dried grass hangings up on the wall - creepy. The room had a bedroom and a living room. Living room had a large maroon leather sectional, with tiny, stained cushions on it, a small round dining table with 2 chairs, and built in dark wood cabinets. The only thing from the past 20 years was the Samsung flat screen TV (no English channels......not even CNN). Wifi is available for free, though connectivity can be spotty in certain areas - we couldn't get wifi in the bedroom. There is a minibar with a couple of small bottles of vodka, a couple of bottles of beer/soft drinks and a bag of chips - this wasn't working when we arrived. Of all the sockets available around the room, less than 3 were actually functional. We had no power available in the bedroom, so had to purchase an extension cord from the local grocery store to get our phones charged in the bedroom. Hotel maintenance, to get the mini fridge working, had a drag a cable from across the room, and tape it to the floor so we wouldn't trip on it. Perhaps it was the dark colours and the overall feel, but it just didn't feel.....clean. Just old with a musty smell permeating through the room. The bathroom - toilet and bath are separated. The toilet is in a tiny room - was always clean while we were there. No problems at all. The bath area has a tub with the hand shower fixed at approximately the 4 foot mark, so taking a traditional shower is only possible if you are either <4 feet tall or if you stoop down - else, you need to shower with the shower held in one hand. No shower curtains - bathroom gets soaked when you shower. Hot water wasn't a problem. 2 sinks, limited storage space - again, cleanliness was not a problem. No bathroom amenities - a squeeze bottle on the wall next to the sink and tub, with an unknown soapy substance inside do not constitute bathroom amenities. Towels are relatively small, and multicoloured - like staying at a friend's place. I was there for 8 days - they know we have 3 people staying in the room - yet, they always, always, always leave 2 towels. I tried explaining repeatedly that 3 people required 3 towels - to no avail. I had to go down and ask for an extra towel daily. Effective hair dryer was attached to the bathroom - worked well. Closet space was small - which is annoying when you are there for an extended period of time. No hangers, bring your own. It was HOT. We had a bit of a heat wave, and besides advice to keep your windows open (thanks, but my windows haven't closed since I arrived thanks to the musty smell) there is no alternate solution provided. i asked if there was a floor/table fan that i could borrow - none available. The bedroom - A double bed (bigger than queen, but smaller than king) comprised of 2 mattresses. What was strange was that the bed was made with 3 flat sheets - 1 on each of the mattresses vertically - and because there were not long enough, 1 sheet that went horizontally across both to cover the bottom half. Pillows are SOFT - like need to be doubled and tripled over if you are looking for neck support (no other option available). Mattresses, on the other hand are very hard. Again, daily maid service - so clean, but with the general old and musty feeling of the room.......a very uneasy sleep (what I describe below probably had something to do with it). The downside - bugs. They are everywhere. Multiple varieties. The windows have screens and with the heat, closing them is not an options. There were tiny, for the most part - crawling, flying. Not unusual to feel something crawling on you while you were sleeping - wake up with bites on your body. This made sleeping very difficult. And the fertiliser - being in a woody area, for some reason people in the area like to lay down fertiliser in the evenings - which results in your musty (heeby jeeby inducing) room smelling like fertiliser....which further encourages bug activity. I spoke to the reception where the guy shrugged, apologised and handed me a can of Raid. There is a buffet breakfast in the mornings - coffee, a orange drink (made from some mix), some bread, eggs, mystery meat (probably only because I don't speak Czech) and some spreads - very basic, but for the price, quite sufficient. The a la carte menu for lunch is limited - food was OK - prices are reasonable. The price for the hotel is very reasonable - its very conveniently located to the various venues utilised by the hockey camp. I paid something like EUR500 for 8 nights. Also, there doesn't seem to be any other option in town. The camp was excellent, but as I said in my feedback to them - I will not attend the camp again due to lack of hotels in the area. I would NEVER stay at this property again. It needs to be completely refurbished, from the ground up - the issues, for me, are way to large to ignore. I am a very, very picky traveller - granted - but in a hotel that supposedly carries a 4 star rating, I expect much more that what Ostrov offers. I understand the European rating system is lot more "liberal" than the American rating system, but even that requires some basics. Assuming 1 is a no name roadside motel and 10 is something like a Four Seasons type brand, discounting the lovely woody setting, i would rate Ostrov as a 3.0 - 3.5.

Interesting place, a real time warpWe just stayed 7 nights here, we started off not liking it from night one and almost checked out, not helped by the fact the heating in our room wasn't working and it was -12, and the next morning there was no hot water, that said they did fix it and the extreme local weather wasn't helping, the decor and hotel overall reminded me of my parents house in the 70's, the other issue was we specifically stayed here this time of year for the use of the jacuzzi, which was broken all week and our room didn't have a bath (to be fair at this stage Nymburk is not a tourist destination and all hotels are like a step back in time, which strangely adds to the appeal) we only go to Nymburk as our kids attend ice hockey at the internally camps, we could only find other hotels in nearby Podebrady, so decided to stay at the Ostrov, as the week went on we kind of warmed to the place, the location is good, in the woods, but on the river and a short walk to the town or over the bridge to local hypermarket (Albert) the staff at the hotel are good, but they are not forthcoming, but good when you go to them, they do have amazing pillows, probably the best of any hotel I have ever stayed in ironically, we got a good deal price was, we didn't have breakfast or even eat at the hotel so I can't comment on the food, but overall it was ok and would use again all that said.

Very satisfied, great for your event! We were invited to spend afternoon and night celebrating a wedding in this hotel. I must admit the choice was a great one. First, the staff was ready to assist with everything. Second, the price for a room with breakfast was reasonable, with two children gratis. The rooms are equipped with mini-bar, TV, wifi and are spacious and clean. Third, you can use services like restaurant and bar on the place, billiard, bowling, kids playroom, sauna or a beautiful terrace surrounded by a park. The event itself took place in an elegant round room upstairs with dance floor and bar. We enjoyed it all!

Hidden GemIt is truly hidden as you wound never find it if you heeded the traffic signs. In Czech it explains that there are exceptions for access. Very tastefully decorated, modern and in excellent condition. Beautiful bathrooms. Wonderful quiet location in well kept grounds. Everything you need for a good nights sleep except the pillows! Why, oh why do some hotels insist on providing pillows that are are so soft they provide no support whatsoever?! I had to roll it up into a ball to rest my head on it. Everything else was wonderful.
