Value for money for big families

The best thing about Hotel Nord Otaru is they have rooms with 4 beds that can sleep 4 adults and one child at a below average price. It is my second time here because I found it to be a good deal. The room is clean, hotel is (walkable with luggage) from train station, hokkaido access ski bus stops at the hotel too! My advise is to check on the available ski bus schedule before planning the number of days stay so that you can plan your trip better if you intend to travel by ski bus in winter. We stayed 4 nights and had 3 full days to enjoy eating in the various restaurants in Otaru and let kids try glass making.

Excellent location & nice room BUT....!

In the height of Coronavirus scare, our bathrooms weren't cleaned at all when we checked in. The toilet room had a very bad fermented fish odor & the bathroom door was very sticky. Inside of the bathtub had a huge soap scum around the rim. After I cleaned the toilet room & bathtub, it smelled much better. It's a shame that the management doesn't take the Coronavirus scare seriously for their guests. They are protecting all of their employees with disposable masks but not for their paying guests!

    Great location and great thermostat

Nice hotel, in good shape. Beds were very comfortable. The location can't be beat - you're right across the street from the Otaru Canal - great for seeing the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival. The bathroom area was nice in that there was a sink in the shower/toilet area, and another one in the vanity (?) area. Good for 2 people to get ready. The thermostat in the room was great - you could switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit (great for those of us who are Celsius-challenged). This is was one of the only hotels we stayed at in our Japan trip that had buttons clearly marked in both Japanese and English. And, it was one of the only hotels we stayed at on our trip where you could actually cool the room down enough (A/C came on), as many of the hotels were unbearably warm in the winter. Seems that most of the Japanese hotels we stayed at only let you change the temperature within a certain heating range, and were not able to cool it down past a certain point. Kudos to this hotel for allowing guests to set the temperature as needed

    Pleasant Stay in "Period-Piece"Hotel

A Modern Hotel built to match the older History of the town and Canal. Enjoy the morning sun streaming through the Stunning Stain-Glass Window in the Lobby based on the local shipping industry. Enjoy the domed bar late at night for the ceiling "Star Constellation"! Yes, the room was quite small, especially with luggage, but our room had a Canal View, and Surprize- a Relaxation Chair, nice after all that walking!

    Nice architecture

During its heyday as Hokkaido's financial hub, Otaru was known as the "Wall Street of the North" (ignore for the moment that New York is actually located at a higher latitude!) Many lovely stone masonry buildings -- former bank buildings -- still exist from that era. While the Hotel Nord Otaru is a modern construction, I like that it had adopted that style. The hotel uses one of those stacked system carparks, but happily, this one accommodates SUVs (such as our Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross). Throughout our two night stay, there was always a space for us, and our car was quickly dispensed at less than five minutes each time we needed it. When you pull in, the valet will clean your car of snow, and use a mallet to break off ice accumulated in your wheel arches, which is great service. The hotel is ideally located along Otaru's famous canal, which also makes it a great location for the snow festival. (I believe the only other two establishments along the canal are the Furukawa and Sonia.) The following room categories have the view of the canal: Accessible Twin, Superior Twin, Executive Twin and both Grande types. A couple of things to note: there are no laundry facitilites. And ice is a paid-for item, but thankfully at no markup (it was in fact ¥10 more expensive for the same tub at the kombini).
