Very good value!Japan can be very hit and miss. I've paid a lot of money in the past and and ended up staying in some pretty woeful places. Conversely, at times when the expenditure has been limited, I have been pleasantly surprised, as I am now with the New Shiobara Hotel. The hotel is another remnant of the bubble era construction boom. Many similar hotels are now showing their age and are not pleasant to stay in. However, the New Shiobara Hotel seems to have kept on top of age related issues and invested in the fixtures and fittings. New furniture and a new flatscreen TV in our room overlooking the river was a very welcome sight. Best part of the experience were the multiple onsen pools to suit every taste - there are surely no other reasons why I would recommend visiting a decaying onsen resort. So, mission accomplished. No great thrills and spills (apart from the onsen) but the hotel does the basic and most important things well at a very reasonable price. I would recommend this place to anyone who seeks to find a good place to stay on a limited budget.

Shocking and horribleI have stayed in many hotels and hostels ranging from 1star to 5 stars. I have experienced a lot but this beat it all. We were firstly told we had to check in between 3-4pm. Arriving, we witnessed a line that made us wait for our key for at least 30 minutes. We had two rooms one for the grandparents and one for my girlfriend and me. As we walked through the hotel we saw many screaming children, loud noises, disturbing music and disgusting smells. (It was advertised as a neat bathing hotel, where you can come at rest). When we arrived at the hotel rooms, we saw the rooms were well out of date with futons being damaged and an airconditioning machines that was always on and was disgusting and old (it was also stuck against one of the two beds). The grandparents had an even worse experience seeing a lot of hair and dirt in the shower and toilet, and furthermore unclean beds and futons. The grandparents complained to the staff which led us being moved to two different rooms. So we packed up and moved everything to a supposedly cleaner room. Our grandparents were furious but seemed to have gotten a slightly better room. Our room on the other hand was a lot worse. The bath tub (absurdly small by the way) was completely covered with rust and dirt and the tiles of the bath tub completed changed color and texture causing it to be unable to use. Even worse, the walls of the bathroom were completely covered with fungus, so bad that we didn't dare showering. So instead of showering in the morning we thought to have a quick breakfast and get out of this place. When arriving at the breakfast hall (which is soo huge it can fit at least 2000 people) we saw a line of around 50+ people waiting for a free table. When we saw this we simply gave up, attempted one more time to join the huge check-out line and get out of there. I have stayed in both poor and excellent hotels, but depending on what you pay and the way the hotel expresses themselves through advertisement. You expect certain expectations. This hotel was still pricy but yet it didn't meet any of these expectations. It was extremely poor and i honestly hope I can convince each and every one of you to not stop here and simply keep on driving. This hotel is not worth your money or even a bit of your time !!

Good place to stay extensiveI stayed overnight with a group of 80 people, arriving at 7 pm. Week day night. The room is already assigned and we can go to our room right away without having to wait. The room's key was in the room. It was a j Japanese style. If you do not ask other wise the staff would come around 8-9 pm. to set up Futon and. Bed 4 U. But u can ask them to set up a bed on a standard box mattress. Air conditioning /or heater was new and control the room temp quiet perfect. It was -3 Celsius right now at 11 pm. There are typically, safe, fridge, hot/cold water tank in your room. It was old style hotel.,so don't expect bath room and toilet as usual-very small space toilet like u r sitting in a box. Dinner was really and I meant it . Fabulous, lots of variety to choose from. Free onsen / separate btwn /male /female, entertainment room ,,liberly.....very good indeed. Extensive range of food for dinner buffet.
