Wonderful hotel, great view, great service

There are many Onsen hotels, Ryokkan, and the like, in Japan. The city of Atami is located south of Mount Fuji, not far from Odawara, and overlooks the Pacific Ocean. There are a number of hotels in Atami, some of which overlook and are located beside the ocean, some of which are located in the mountains overlooking the ocean, and others of which are located in particular places because of their proximity to hot springs and natural hot water. Hotel Micura was chosen for its proximity to the ocean, because it is located away from the center of the city, and because it seemed to have good reviews from other travelers.he

Good size rooms, friendly staff, and a great bartender!

The hotel is about an eight to ten minute walk from the station. It's downhill going so fairly easy but quite a climb on the way back, especially with a bag in tow. The quickest route from the station takes you to the back of the hotel. On entry a staff member greeted us and we were asked to take a seat while they checked the reservation and paperwork. All went very smoothly and we were taken to our room and the facilities explained. Perhaps half the rooms do not have a view and I chose one that didn't since it came with a private onsen bath. The twin room was quite large and had double wash basins, a separate toilet, a small refrigerator, a pot for boiling water, and tea and coffee packs. All the necessary amenities such as toothbrushes, razors, shower caps, cotton pads, brushes were also provided. Towels were plentiful also. If you use the communal onsen baths, you take the towels from the room with you. The hotel pajamas are excellent. So good, in fact, that my wife bought a pair from the gift shop near the lobby and the only reason I didn't was the size. Negative points: care needed to be taken when going between the bed area and the washbasins since there was a slight step where one could trip or stub a toe, and there is also a raised bar when entering the bath area. The onsen bath needs filling for use and this takes about 40 minutes, and the wifi in the room was very slow, about 5mps. After dropping off the bags in our room, we headed down to the lounge area where coffee, various teas, juices, and cookies are provided to guests, free of charge, between 2pm and 5pm. We had dinner in the restaurant (French) on the 3rd floor. This is also where breakfast is taken. I had reserved the course menu for the first night only, in advance. The food didn't disappoint, the wine was quite good although a bit overpriced, and the service excellent. Following dinner we headed to the bar, which is on the 2nd floor up the stairs from the lounge area. My reservation included free flowing cocktails (and wine, basic whisky) for 2 hrs. How good is the bartender! I had some of the best cocktails I have had in a long time. As a note. the free-flowing drink option can be had for 3,500 yen a person at the time and, of course, other cocktails and liquors are available at individual pricing. Breakfast started at 7.30 and this is a vegetarian (or vegan) paradise. I don't think I have ever seen such a wide variety of fresh vegetables available in any hotel. There were also gratin dishes, eggs, small sausages, yogurt, fruit, cereal, bread, deserts, juices and a number of small bowls containing a variety of other options. Very filling and quite nutritious. The next two evenings we took dinner at izakaya not too far from the hotel but we returned in the evening to the bar, and those great cocktails. All-in-all, a great stay, with excellent staff. We will no doubt choose to stay here again on our next visit to Atami. (extra note: the car park is, or was, 1200 yen per night. The charge for my daughter's 2yr old was over 7,000 yen per night, despite her having a 4 bed-room so expect charges for children however small)

Noise from speakers on beach a summer problem here

This is a nice hotel but unfortunately during summer the beach lifeguards shout all day into speakers and the loud noise enters the room even with windows closed. The loud noise is unnecessary and very uncomfortable in these beach front rooms. If you are on the beach the noise is worse of course. They need to fix the summer noise pollution. The hotel should speak to the city office about this. My family would like to stay again during this coming 2020 summer but the noise is a big issue. Many other people staying at the hotel have the same issue. 2020
