Stayed twiceWe stayed here on 2 separate nights during our trip up north. It's pretty much the only place to stay but decent accommodations. It was a very busy place too and friendly staff. Booking online and in advance with no cancellation gives the best deal but it may not be too clear on how to do that, but worked for us.

Place good, staff in restaurant not so goodCheck in was great. Got a ground floor which I liked because I was able to park right in front of my room. I went to eat dinner and had to grab my own menu despite there being 5 staff members working. After 12 minutes... and my face showing impatience, someone finally asked what Id like. I ordered a tomato sauce spaghetti (they gave me meat sauce), never was asked if I needed something to drink and basically was being avoided. I suspect its because I spoke English. They were all francophone. The staff socialized among themselves and hovered over the table that held cut cakes for desert. It was out in the open and talking and laughing over it surely put extras on top of those cakes. (Needless to say, I didnt have any) Price was good, food was good, service was horrible.

You're all in it togetherMatagami is the stepping off point for a lot of remote destinations to the north, so we always stop here before venturing further. It's a great stop after a long day of driving. The stay here is generally one of necessity and not one for luxury, so don't expect your pillows fluffed! On Thursdays, the restaurant is packed! It's a huge blend of travelers and locals all getting together to share stories and a beverage. You can hear a mix of English, French, and Cree being spoken, with a heavy dose of laughter bridging the gaps. The beds are decent, the food satisfying and don't forget to get gas before you leave - it'll be the last you see for a while.

Nice place, great restaurantThere is not a lot of choice in the area. It's the last town before the James Bay road. The room was ok, a bit small, but it did the job for a night. It was really clean. There was a fridge, a TV, and a coffee machine in the room. Furniture was recent with power outlets on the desk and on the nightstand. Wifi was slow, but that was expected in such a remote region. There was almost no water coming out of the faucet in the sink. We used the bathtub to wash our hands and brush our teeth. Fortunately, the shower had normal pressure, and plenty of hot water. We were happily surprised by the restaurant. It is the only in town! Food was good, and prices reasonable. Service was a bit slow, the staff seemed to be busy. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Poor service ruins a good experienceThe quality of the accommodation is good. What a pity it is let down by poor service in the restaurant / bar. On 8 March I checked in and headed downstairs for a beer and a meal. The bar tender / server Nadine took ages to get to me, although there were only a few customers at the bar. I was NEVER offered a menu. After my beer I left in disgust and got a takeaway across the street. On 9 March I tried again. Once again Nadine was officiating. This time I got a beer and a menu quite quickly and was hopeful, but after that I was just forgotten! I sipped slowly on my beer, hoping I might get to order, but no. Nadine's working life consists of laughing and joking and drinking tequila shots with a few young customers, and never mind the service for the rest. When I dared mention that in 20 minutes I had received NO attention, and would really like to order, she flipped her head and pranced off to tell someone else to take my order. Now I don't know what the norm is in Matagami, but I just can't believe that this is the best staff one can find. This is otherwise a good small hotel with clean rooms and comfortable beds. I have stayed here 7 years running. But really, this staff member is ruining your reputation.
