Perfect for a quick stop offMy family stayed here for 2 nights last week and we found it very functional and perfect for our walk in the mountains. While the decor is very dated, the charm of the building and the fantastically large room and bed were enough to make it a pleasant stay. The staff were very kind and friendly, especially the lady at reception, very warm and engaging and made us feel that she really wanted us to be there and enjoy our stay. The breakfast was simple but plentiful. I would recommend staying at this hotel but you must look beyond the old decoration.

Good for childrenWe stayed a night on our way to Spain and were happy about it. Had a room on the front with a balcony, great view and with open windows sound of the river. The lady ar the reception was really friendly and helpful (arranged an appointment with a doctor). For our doughter (3) there was a nice surprice: a childrens toilet and playing room in the basement. We ate in the restaurant, very convenient. Nice spacious room, friendly waitress. Food was ok, not especially good.

Very disappointingThis hotel has many good reviews and so we booked three nights. The welcome was friendly but, unfortunately, the room turned out to be sub-standard. It was immediately apparent that the room had not been cleaned carefully. The bathroom was ok but the bedroom had obviously not been dusted in some time. A quick wipe of the skirting gathered a blank wad. Now what REALLY disappointed me is, that when this was pointed out to the previously friendly lady at reception, she went on the defensive. No apology at all. We were told that we had to stay for all 3 nights and there would be no new room and that no one had *ever* complained before. OK. Let's assume this was a slip-up. A good hotel manager would apologize first and then try to satisfy their guest. This for me is the real problem. Beats me why it has gathered so many positive reviews. There appears to by a systemic fault here. They also have those infernal sausage pillows. I hate them and sleep badly. In this case, they have no pillowcase but wrap it in the bottom sheet which means that this sheet does not reach down to the foot of the bed. The mattress is therefore not completely covered by the sheet. Gross! The hotel may be 'charming' but give me 'clean' any time! We did not stay for the whole time we paid for :-(

Old world and convenientShort stay in the Auvergne at end of September, this hotel is convenient for the town of Bourboule - just a 5 min walk, and is very reasonably priced. We had a comfort room at front of hotel and although you couldn't describe it as luxurious it was certainly comfortable. Hotel looks as though its recently been updated (to a budget) and carpeting looked new as did the beds and paintwork. Everything worked and was clean and rather quaint hotel looks as though it was once very grand but the crowds have now gone away. The hotel staff were always helpful and on hand, the lady on reception spoke pretty useful English . La Bourboule is an old spa town that looks past its best, obviously not the destination it was 25 years ago, the cable car shut in 2012 and several buildings appeared abandoned, however we weren't there to see the town we were there to see the countryside and the volcanoes - there was certainly spectacular scenery within a 30 min drive including Puy de Sancy and Puy de Dome. I know this was the off-season but I never quite worked out the hotel restaurant / bar, I was never sure that it was open but we always ate in the town and there was a variety of restaurants available there although most seemed to shut early (c. 21:00)
